Everything I find indicates that this is a problem with the document feeder. It's suggested resolution is to remove and reload the media (paper) into the document feeder tray. If the error persists then replace the document scanner pickup motor.

In your case since the printer is new, if theproblem persists in spite of carefully placing paper into the feeder tray, then I recommend you return it to the place of purchase and tell them that it is not picking up paper correctly and that you either want a refund or an exchange (depending onwhether you are willing to try another printer of the same make/model).

I encountered the same thing with another model of printer we received within the last two months. A new prointer would not pickup paper unless it was like an inch away fromthe pickup roller (not fully inserted???) -- we swapped it for another of the same model and had no problem with the second.
