HP will not load Windows - restarts

By timmedsker ·
I have an HP Pavilion 8770C that will not allow Windows XP Pro to load. It was running and after some brief power outages, it will not run. I am in need of repairing the boot(i guess that is the problem)and not losing any information on my HDD. Will the Recovery Console work? Or, is there something else that I can do besides backing my work up to prevent this panic from happening again?!? :)~ It is not the unmountable boot volume...or atleast the blue screen of death is not diplayed. Basically, the computer starts, goes to the options of normal startup, command prompt ect ....and then goes to the XP pro screen and then restarts itself and this continues.

mmmm Sound like the Power Supply may be faulty or some Hardware.

Also check that the CPU Fan is working and the memory is seated properly.

Try and boot it in SAFE Mode.

To turn off the automatic reboot on system error,
Control Panel>system>advanced>startup & recovery settings, uncheck the box to
reboot on system failure.
The next time it happens, you should get an
error message rather than reboot.

This may help diagnose the problem.

If you get that far, not a boot sector problem.

As previously mentioned, try booting into safe mode and disable restart on error.

If you can boot into safe mode, probably a driver issue.

Error message will be of great help in providing a solution.

Without any other information, I would suspect a corrupt registry. If that's the case, we can provide instructions for repair.

If all you are really worried about is getting the data off (let's face it a reinstall of XP is not very difficult), get yourself a converter to standard IDE (desktop) remove the hard drive and connect it up. Then its a simple drag and drop exercise. The laptop drive should automatically show as a slave drive (in 2000 XP or Linux)

Atleast that way you are sure the data is safe. XP can obviously repair itself but this can cause some issues in the my documents folder including complete corruption. May be a round about way but it appears all you are really concerned about is the data.
