HUB CONNECTION

By npanchal7 ·
How to connect one hub or swhitching hub to another hub or switching hub? Is it with a straight over lan cable or with Cross over lan cable? One end of the cable will connect to uplink and the other where will connect, to the uplink of the other hubor in any other port?

If you have an uplink port you can connect a straight thru cable from the uplink to a normal port on the 2nd hub.

If you do not have an ulink port on either hub you need a crossover cable to connect them.

Use the old rule of thumb...when connecting dissimilar devices, use a straight through cable. Like devices use a crossover. If you use the uplink port, then it makes the devices "dissimilar" and you'll connect a straight through cable to the other hub/switch just like you would any other host device.

Hope this helps! Good luck....

yes, another rule of thumb: you are going for link lights. if you get everthing right on both ends of the cable, you get the link light. there is often a switch somewhere that turns the uplink port into normal or uplink. if you don't have the uplinkport correctly configured, you won't see a link lite. plug in your straight thru cable on the uplink port on one end and a regular port on the other switch on the other end and you can play with the switch, watch the link like go on and off as you toogle it...
an interesting tidbit: on some linksys 5 port workgroup switches, if you use the uplink port, you can't use the port next to it. go figure. good idea to have coffee and read over the stuff that comes with the switches...
