Hyperlinks not working in IE 6.0

By dkrohn66 ·
Hello,

my hyperlinks have stopped working in I.E 6.0 on a win 2000 machine. The only way they will work is if i open a browser session first. If i try to use a hyperlink i get the following message ...

Windows cannot find EXPLO~1.EXE

Ive tried several suggestions of cleaning the registry, registering certain dll's . I've tried to repair iE but its integrated into the SP2 pack of Windows2000, so I cant seem to get at it. I tried the MS suggestions to uninstall it with no luck.

Install a browser like firefox and set it to be the dafault browser. Hyperlinks should now work.

Check file associations. A hyperlink should open using IEXPLORE.EXE.

Control Panel -> Folder Options -> File Types

When you say hyperlinks, is this hyperlinks on a normal HTML page or URL type shortcuts.
EXPLORER.EXE is a File Manager program, IE is actually IEXPLORER.EXE, a seperate program.
HTML or HTM files tend to be assoicated with the default browser.
URL, and Internet Shortcuts are associated via a DLL: i.e.
rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %l

More info would be helpful, esp exact situation when you get the above error.

"This program is needed for opening files of type "URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocol". It gives me a button for ok, cancel or locate.

well, if there is a way to do it, i sure wish i could split these points between p.j and willcomp. Both your posts guided me to compare the filetypes. Thanks a bunch !! Both those hyperlink types were all capitalized and full of "~" symbols. Set them like my other machine and whammo the IE hyperlinks work again.

Thanks you guys rock, sorry i clicked unacceptable b4 i looked for the 3rd time :)

Not sure how those got messed up, some malware i suppose.
