Run an ipconfig /all from the xp machine, this should give you all the data (dns wins gateway etc) that you need to add to the tcp properties on the me machine. You may also have to add the NETBUI protocol to the me machine although the xp is not supposed to support it anymore. Any way compare the results of the ipconfig/tcp properties. Also with the ip address from the xp machine you may want to try a ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx from the me machine and see what is returned.
on another point, you may want to engage people in discussion of your problems and not reject them out of hand, DR is a pretty sharp cookie and he can offer some real good advice if you let him.............

Network Setup Wizard
Click Start and point to All Programs. Then click Accessories, click Communications, and click Network Setup Wizard.

You already have the internet connection working so you've completed what is usually the hard part.
The network sharing isn't that difficult, you'll just need to complete a few simple steps.

You need to have workgroup, users, client, adapter, protocol, and shares. You have most of these already.

Again since you can connect to the internet you have a client, adapter and protocol. That leaves workgroup, users and shares.

To connect to the XP machine the user from the other PC needs to be added in order to access the shared resources. So the Win ME user login name and password much match exactly to a user added to XP. You'll need to have file and printer sharing enabled. Also something has to be shared.
Remember XP has a builtin firewall that may need to be disabled or setup to allow the sharing.

Win ME, Open Network properties in control panel.
Select identification tab across top and name the computer and workgroup.
Select sharing option.
To Share resources, right click on printer, folder etc and select sharing choose shared as and name it or accept the name provided.
From there when you can see the other PC over the network you can map drives, folders and sshare printers.

It would be a good ideal to put passwords on your shared resources so that possible intruders will have a harder time getting in. Don't select the save passwords check box.

Since you use DSL a firewall would be a good thing. If you have that, the firewall may need to be setup to allow neitbios over tcpip. Also there may be a setting to allow others to reach my shares or something simular.

NETBEIU is a safer protocol but it's a bit of an issue with XP. You'll have to install it from the XP disk. But it doesn't appear over the TCPIP network and would be invisible to the WAN or internet.

Goosd luck

I share a dsl pipe between XP and 98 frequently, to share files, printers, etc. Both need to have file and print sharing enabled. Both need to be in the same workgroup. If you are using static IP, make sure that both systems have the same subnets. There is also a patch for the Windows 98 (ME) system that enables it to interface with the XP system.
