I can't setup Windows XP Pro anymore ?

By mtolgay ·
Well it all started like this, I was defragging my HDD on Windows XP Pro, while doing this action I deceided somehow to connect my cross cable which was connected to my computer which was defragging on XP Pro to my Laptop which also runs Windows XP,what happened next was that the LAN Connection detected sign appeared in the icon box and it showed that both computers were connected with each other properly and at this point everything fell apart. My Computer running XP Pro (not the laptop) crushed, and as I restarted the computer it crushed on the Windows XP Pro bootup screen again and again on every restart. So I deceided to re-setup XP Pro what happened the XP Pro setup crushed on 30% or something like this everytime. So I deceided to setup Windows 2K Pro until this is solved, which properly installed itself on the system... So what do I have to do to run XP Pro again on my system

I can't setup Windows XP Pro anymore ?

by Deadly Ernest In reply to I can't setup Windows XP ...

When i encountered this problem on a client's machine I removed the hard drive and put it into my pc as a slave and deleted the Windows directory and the windows boot files in the c: drive root area. Then put it back in the original pc and booted from the XP disc and reloaded the operating system.

If the disc is formated FAT32 you can do the deletions using a Win98 Boot disk. NB in this case easier to rename the windows directory after deleting most files (getting all the nested files out inDOS is a bugger).

After rebuilding the system you should make one important adjustment to the system set up, I do this on ALL my XP installations.

Go 'Control Panel' >> 'System' >> 'Advanced' tab >> Setup and Recovery section 'Settings' button>>
and in the 'System Failure' section uncheck the box beside 'Automatic restart' this will stop the crash/restart process. What happens then is it crashes and continues to load with the faulty drivers etc unloaded, will often pop into 'safe' mode.
