I even tried an obscure Bulgarian Chant

By jerrylee_20 ·
I even tried an obscure Bulgarian Chant I bought online and it didn't work. I have two servers, both with ABIT VP6 MBD, dual 700Mgh processors, ATI video, identical nics, sound, and so on....... both have Win98se at this time
Server #1, is running great, Server #2 is pushing it's luck. No matter what I try to load as the OS as soon as I get to windows the saytem hangs, Sometimes it will toy with me for a bit and run for a anywhere from a few minutes to, (and get this, if I manage to open a billiards game it will not hang, but as soon as I close it) &*%$#@*&^%$*
I have debugged/Fdisk/Formatted more than a few times.
I have R&R every component, and even loaded windows on the other server and as soon as I boot it in #2.....hangs. The MBD checks out, new BIOS,rolled back Bios, I am at a loss. Oh, did I mention that the HDD from #2 runs well in #1 and HDD from #1 works well in #2. but will hang after a bit.
HELP!!!!!! I have several of the chants to trade....

Servers with Win98????

Are they networked? Did you use the same name on both? If you shutdown #1; will #2 run OK?

The problem happens (Sys hangs) weather networked or not, and no the have unique names. #2 runs independent and as of right now it shows no signs of this problem

OK, got a year. I have updated the bios, replaced the new bios, rolled back the bios, change the cmos battery, reformatted the drive several times, debugged, installed win 3.1, 95, 98, 98se. Removed and replaced sound card, network card, video card(Nvida and rage), changed memory, cables, over clocked, under clocked, the BIOS on both are the same down to each setting, The hdd from server #1 will format with no problem in server #2 but as soon as it has been put back in it's own box(server) bam, locks up as soon as there is any scroll mouse movement 95% of the time. Yes I have used PS2 mouse, USB, two button, wheel, optical .........I have tried everything except taking it to the strip(I live in Vegas) and getting it drunk and picking up women, but tomorrow is Friday..

Yes it will do safe mode.

Now here is a problem with some logical meat for the Sherlock Holmes in all of us! Tell me about your power supply, did you swap that out also? are they the same? How do you know the mother board checks out? Are they (PCs') in very similar environments? Have you monitored for temp diffs between them? It seems as if you have done a great job of elimination, hopefully you have been keeping a journal of all you have done and the similarities and differences of both machines. A problem with this depth and elusiveness is made so much easier to solve by going through organized steps. One sunday when you are sipping lemonade in the backyard or at the beach you will review your notes and BAM! it will hit you... the one thing you overlooked. So right now write down all you did and use it as a problem solving map.

You did not mention the Power Supply or the chipset drivers you may have installed for the motherboard. Are they the same versions. If you did not install any, are any updates available, not bios, chipset. The key is to remain positive and realize you are way down the road to a solution since you eliminated so much. You must keep track of it all so you can figure out where to go next. Could be something simple as a cooling fanin backwards on #2, or not working efficiently. Is this a new problem after a relative long period of working properly? what do you mean by "No matter what I try to load as the OS " Are you loading different windows (98, 2000, nt) and still the sameproblem?

Loaded from win3.1 thru 98se, temp is all the same, bios update, bios roll back, keeping a log and I get how much time spent without success updates from my wife on the half hour now(Kidding). I have dissassembled both and put them part by part back together at the ame time and bamm #1 hangs and #2 no problem except one, it is in my wife's office and #1 is in mine....

Your problem is that you used the wrong chant. You should have used obscure Tibetin Buddhist chants.

The first problem I see is that Win9x is not a multi-processor capable operating system. Therefore you are wasting the second processor on bothcomputers. Try taking the second processor out of #2.

You mentioned "No matter what I try to load as an OS." Have you tried Win2K Pro or WinXP Pro (NOTE: XP Home is not multi-processor capable)?

Did not try 2k, however the ABIT VP6 with the dual processor is good to go with 98se if you get in all the critical updates. http://www.hardware-one.com/ has that info. I'll give 2k the next shot but I hate NTFS. I did the Buddhist chant but the smoke detector kept waking up the house

You rejected Tim's answer but he's right ..Windows 3.1 95 98 are not dual processor capable O/S. I thing what's really going on is that s#1 computer is running great probably because the second processor isn't functioning .....#2 isn't running great because the second processor is functioning. try taking a processor out in system #2 and see if the problem goes away.....

Note: W2K XP and W2K server and W2003 server a dual processor [or more...up to eight I believe for W2K Advanced server &W2003 server] capable.

W98 isn't server software which is why everyone is scratching their head and asking "server"????
