By hayoubee ·
I have Back office SBServer and I had to used the Proxy to secure my LAN,since short time I begon to internet through router because I have only one IP adres the router is connected to one of the HUB in my lan,and this routerconnected to the ADSL modem,So you can understand that my clients are connected directly to the internet where the server play no role.I'm worry a bout the securty of mu LAN,How can I secure my network in this case.

I have internet,How to secure my LAN

The best way to secure the LAN from external attecks is to get a firewall in place FAST! There are two options - either a software firewall, which runs on the server, or a physical hardware firewall which you plug in between the HUB and the router. Personal preference plays a big part in which you go for, I personally prefer the physical firewall, as I feel that it gives better protection (provided it is configured correctly. Have a look at the Firebox II from Watchguard (www.watchguard.com)- I used one for my last company - very easy to configure and get up and running, and to maintain. They also have a good support desk which is very important, and they send out regular updates to the firewall software, along with virus warnings etc.

hichever option you choose, you need to do it FAST, as without any form of protection, you are extremely vunerable (I hope that at the very least you have a virus checker running on all machines!)

Proxy server will protect you with out having to incur the cost of an additional hardware.

First install a second network card in the proxy server, configure it to use the ipaddress from the router.

Setup DHCP on the SBS server, create the scope to have a private network address (10.0.0.0-10.255.255.254 are valid subnets)
set the default gateway in DHCP to point to the internal card of the Proxy.

Apply all patches and security hotfixes to your SBS/PROXY server, especially the Code Red patch.

Now you have protected your network. And the cost to you was the cost of a 10mbit Ethernet card.

You could spend thousands of dollars on hardware or software 'firewalls', but you do have a reliable setup with proxy. Just don't go opening a bunch of ports so people can download napster or listen to radio over the internet. The ports you open the more holes you have to protect.

Hope this helps.
