I need help with a Compaq Presario modem

By dtosh369 ·
I updated a friends Compaq Presario 4704 Desktop computer from Windows 95 to Windows 98 SE and everything went great except I can't get the modem to work. I pulled the cover off and looked at the (1996)modem and it had a sticker on it with the following numbers: co-2819IVD and 96-294-45468
I think it must be a driver problem. I have been to the compaq website with no luck. Does anyone have any advice on what I should do next? Thanks

I need help with a Compaq Presario modem

Let's see, 1996, this is probably a hardware modem. I also suspect that at best it is a 33.6k modem.

First, see if Windows 98 has native drivers.
Go to device manager and remove the modem.
Then reboot the computer and see if Windows will identify the modem and install the correct drivers.
You might also check for device conflicts ("?", "!") while your in device manager. Take care of those first.

If that fails, look at the modem again.
There should be 1 or 2 large IC's on it.
See ifyou can identify who made the IC's, and write down the numbers on the ICs.
Then go to the manufactures web site, and download the reference drivers for the modem chipset.

Or, if the computer has a spare PCI slot, upgrade to a 56K modem. You canfind modems at the major electronics store, or on the web for under $20.

I have had very good luck with an Intel chipset modem that sells for $13.25 at www.compgeeks.com

Another site to check for drivers is www.driverguide.com

You should also be able to identify the modem and find drivers at www.modemhelp.org

Hi
I ma sorry to say that your modem is a winmodem.
Winmodems are not really modems, but manufacturers make them for 2 reasons Most people do not know the difference and disks are cheaper than hardware chips. A winmodem lacks parts found in regular modems-- these parts are "emulated" by software running on your CPU.a Winmodem requires software, and usualy the only software available for Winmodems comes from the manufacturers or some workgroup.your modem could be this one the 33.6 k one and most likly Compaq/Lucent Compaq Presario 336-VSC.if it did not work pls chek the others. check Drivers\Modem\Compaq folder on the Windows 98 CD-ROM.
Additional Modem Drivers Included on the Windows 98/98 Second Edition CD-ROM (Q190363)

Read more about modems.

For me I would upgrade to a newer modem but not winmode.
Good luck

Mohamed
