I want to share printer and external hd wirelessley while main pc is off

By bosphorus ·
What I want to do is rather simple: to share printer and external hd wirelessley while the main pc is off. I purchased this from ebay (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320507519631&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT) but I do not think it's going to do the trick?
If someone knows anything about this please shine a light?
Thank you
Ali

Should fix your printer problem, but not your HD.

And not wirelessly for either. This isn't the tool for what you're trying to do.

Thanks, do you know what I should be using instead?

Do the printer and hard drive have any built-in wireless capability?

Do you have a wireless router?

PRINT SERVER SHOULD WORK, BUT.....

Hi bosphorus,
from what I can see what you have should work, as long as you have a wireless router to connect the server to. The router must
have ethernet ports on it and most do. You
will have to connect the HDD and PRINTER to the server via USB, and the server to your router via ethernet (RJ45) cable. You will
then need to configure the server to run the
HDD and PRINTER (see instruction w/ server you purchased). Similar to sharing a printer connected on you computer over your network,
except the server will be its access point.

Yes, that NAS server worked but it wasn't what I wanted. It only worked while the main pc was on (which the wireless router and windows network already achieves without a need for such a device anyway) and to see the EHD I needed to open a program and connect to it every time I turned on the PC (that seemed such a pain). I now purchased this and will see the capabilities (http://www.buffalotech.com/products/network-storage/home-and-small-office/linkstation-live-ls-chl/

The only way this thing will work is if it is attached to a Wireless Router. Then, if you get the security correct, you should see the HD and Printer wirelessly. I would purchase one that is a WIRELESS Storage and Print Server like this one....

Yes, I agree if you have to buy a router definitly purchase one that has a USB port,
that way you wont have to do nearly as much
set-up work.

I read some reviews about that product on Amazon and they were way below the average which made me evade it. I bought this instead but have not set it up yet: http://www.buffalotech.com/products/network-storage/home-and-small-office/linkstation-live-ls-chl/

Agreed.

I'm guessing, but it sounds like right now the traffic for these devices passes through the PC because these devices don't have IP addresses of their own. A wireless router will allow you to assign addresses to the ports these devices are connected to. Then traffic from your laptop will know where to go to reach them.
