IBM sold their storage products division to Hitachi Data Systems.
I did not find any USB drives listed on Hitachi's web site.

I suspect that what is listed on ebay is the case from an IBM external drive.

Hard to say if IBM made the case themselves, or if it is private labeled for them.
I would suspect that someone else makes the case for them.

Yes, the item is only a case for use on any HDD, hence on the advert it does say NOT INCLUDING HDD or something in that line and clearly states its only a HDD enclosure and not HDD.I've email IBM before and they too thought it is a HDD,had to email them again to statue re-read the advert as it clearly states its an enclosure and not HDD.Hopefully this time they can tell me who makes the enclosure for them.

Keep in mind that MANY OEM manufacturing contracts have clauses in them that can prevent EITHER party from telling a 3rd party who actually manufactured the product.

I believe that the individual selling the enclosure either needed the hard drive that was originally in the enclosure, or the drive died and has been destroyed or replaced.

I suggest that you contact the seller, and get the exact IBM model on the case so that IBM will know exactly what you are referring to.

Oh right,I was not aware that does happen.I would have thought, lets say,IBM would name the 3rd party in case if something goes wrong, finger would be pointed at the right direction.

It appears the seller have been selling the same product for some time, acting as a agent. Also noted this product is also sold on ebay by loads of other people, starting at the same price.I guess they are also agents.

I've contacted IBM,therefore waiting for reply.

Not to be a pest, but I searched IBMs site for USB hard drives and only came up with 2 models.

A 20GB 09N4211
and a 40GB 09N4255

If you are seeing a lot of these on ebay, and they are going cheap, I suspect that these are part of the fallout of the transfer of assets from IBM to Hitachi.

My guess is that IBM was using 1 OEM supplier, and that Hitachi had an agreement with a different manufacture.
A surplus of the drive enclosures was disposed of and have found their way to ebay.

I would be almost positive that Hitachi is suppling the current production. But, they might not be manufacturing the enclosures themselves.

I would be VERY surprised if IBM were to provide you with information as to who made the enclosure.
In fact, without a model AND serial number they may not be able to identify which supplier made the enclosure.

Found this similar auction:

They specifically state that the enclosure was NOT made by IBM.

Pest,not at all.

Lets recap, we are only talking about the enclosure with IBM trade marking on the enclosure and not HDD,right?

Actually, at this point, both.

It looks like IBM did NOT make the enclosure or electronics from the information on 1 auction I found on ebay.

Further, IBM no longer makes ANY consumer device hard drives.
If you find a hard drive with the IBM label on it, it was either made by Hitachi as an OEM product for IBM, or it is over 1 year old.

IBM still makes large hard drives for mainframe and server systems.
