How to change text color of the icons on Win NT4 desktop to transparent, to match with background?

Probably the easiest way is to get TweakUI (available on WIN98 cd, or downloaded from microsoft.com) and change it that way. If you are daring you can do the registry hack located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\GRE_Initialize It is stored in the FONTS.FON value entry. Be advised that you also need to include the .fon ending and I don't know what the transparent font filename is. I have not done it that way, I have always used TweakUI so I don't know how that will turn out. Hope this helps
