Identity/e-mail disappeared

By cmiyoshi ·
Windows XP and it seems it has made another identity for my user but my e-mail is gone and everythign on my desktop, as well as all my favorites. I searched and found two valued users, the new one has numbers after it. I need to figure out how to fix the problem and recover all my stuff. Also I need to know how do I view hidden files?

nice sleuthing out the users.
the one with numbers after it is probably the one you are logged is as now. wonder if your old profile became corrupt or it somehow you simply got a new one started. either is probable but i'm betting the latter.
so can you simply pick Start/Logout <currentprofile) then Login with each of the profiles you found, one at a time, see if you get your stuff back?
Here is how you view hidden/system files in XP:
Open the folder, pick Tools/Folder Options/View tab/click Show hidden and system files. uncheck Hide system files, uncheck Hide extensions for important operating system files.
remember you did this, though. so when you start to see strange stuff on your Desktop you will remember that you are now viewing files that previously were Hidden.
You might enjoy googling some of your questions and taking the links to the microsoft articles it finds. if you use the works how to, eg. how to corrupt profile' you will find the how to articles microsoft has for home users. a wealth of info. the technical articles can be a bear but the How To articles are useful.
remember the Help in XP also...

It looks as if your old profile has got corrupted and Windows XP has created a new profile for you.
You need to gain ownership of the old profile in C:\documents and settings and import the desktop shortcuts and files from old profile to your new one.

if you right click on My Computer icon, Properties - Advanced tab- under User profiles- Settings you will view all the users of your computer and you have options of copying or deleting a profile. You can also access the control panel to add or remove a user.

look for your old profiles there or copy the existing ones.
