IE 5.5 error

By mriera50 ·
Hi:
I'm running a system with Windows ME, Office 2000, and IE 5.5. My problem is that Explorer keeps crashing an is always in one of these three situations:
1- when I'm trying to type in the Address bar (this is the most common one)
2- when I'm typing in a box in the window
3- when I'm writing online e-mail in Hotmail
In all three cases the message is always
'IExplore has caused an error in module USER.EXE'...Any suggestions? Thanks

Open the Control Panel and select the Add/Remove Programs icon, select IE5 in the window and click the Remove button,in the pop up menu choose to Restore a previous version of IE,after this process you may want to select to use IE 5.01 and download the service pack, the Repair option often does not work very well. This way you will have a clean install of IE and the option to upgrade back to IE5.5

HI:
Thanks for your prompt response...I've followed your suggestion and after removing IE5.5 I reinstalled from the Microsoft Update. Unfortunately, this has not correct the problem and the crashes continue in the same situations and giving the same error message...

This sounds like virus/worm/trojan activity. Do a scan.

Ah beloved Windows, go to either 2000 or 98. Just kidding. A problem in the User.exe usually means that there is a corrupted file in your profile. Login to windows as a different ID and see if the problem persists.

Hi:
Sorry for the delay...I don't have any ID beside mine..I've checked in Control Panel USERS to create ....but it asked for Networking and other things, and I was reluctant to create it just in case I got stuck with more troubles...If I createanother user..can I get rid of it after we find out whether this sorts the problem? I wait for advice...Cheers

I had a problem with IE5.5 crashing the problem was caused by a corrupt password file (*.pwl) try deleting you password file and windows will then create a new one.
