IE5 Launch Error

By saihib ·
Running Win98 Upgrade when I launch IE5 I get the following message:

IEXPLORE caused an exception 6d007eH in module urlmon.dll at 015f:79420d66

Trying to reinstall from C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup generates a "file missing or corrupt" error.

Even Microsoft's repair utility, both GUI and command line, fails to correct the problem. System file checker and version utilities report no errors. Short of a complete reinstall of Win98 does anyone have any suggestions?

IE5 has quite a few bugs like this... on certain computers it has a bad tendency to not allow viewing secure websites, or won't let people view them at all... I get literally 50 calls a day from win98 users about this... Best fix: restore previous windows configuration option in the repair tool. If this doesn't work, you might want to consider that win98 reinstall, then go with the MSIE that came with it. Luck to you!

For this answer I will be assuming that you are using the first edition of Windows 98 which comes with IE 4 and then upgraded via download. IF this is the case, then I hate to disappoint you but you will probably want to reinstal your windows and replace ALL dlls, etc. that came with it. Consistant Exception errors indicate invalid instructions given to the CPU on a continual basis.

There is a workaround: Try installing another browser like Opera or Netscape. OF course if that doesn't work than Windows reinstallation (or at least reinstalation of Windows componants) is a given.

One more thing to try (long shot): uninstal and reinstal your Dial Up Networking. I have used this to solve the darndest problems (but it doesn't always work).

There are a couple of things you can try.
1. Try renaming urlmon.dll to urlmon.old and then extract urlmon.dll using the System File Checker.
2. If you did try to reinstall windows98 you would have to do a few steps befor you would get a successfull re install. If you have installed IE 5.0 you can not just reinstall your 98 first edition over the top. if you did that then IE 4 would get entangled with IE 5. so here is what you must do before reinstalling 98.
step 1. find the file IEMIGRAT.DLL which is located usualy c:\windows\system. rename that file to iemigrat.old.
step 2. Delete the folders.
c:\program files\internet explorer
c:\program files\outlook express
or from DOS
deltree c:\progra~1\intern~1 deltree c:\progra~1\outloo~1
once those DIR's are deleted you can then run a setup over itself.
its best to do it from DOS.
boot with your startup disk, so you have CD rom support.
then at the CD ROM drive run SETUP it will install right overthe top of itself wi

I had a similar problem installing IE5,and I
went to the control panel, add and remove programs, click on IE5 to remove and you will get a drop down menu that will give you a choice to restore missing files which will give you the set-up process again, follow the on screen instructions

I guess this tool doesn't always work successfully.
