IIS4.0 not allowing web author access

By c_kelley ·
I have 8 websites set up on an NT server running IIS4 and sql6.5. Of the 8 I have 2 that if you try and access them through a web editing tool you get an error meesge that the site is on an unavailable volume or is protected by a password. It will not a ccept any passwords or logins. If you try and access through a mapped drive it will produce similiar errors. Yet you can publish to the site. Help Please!
PS> We have had this problem before and do not know what was done to correct it.

Since you mentioned the problem also pops up when you access the data from a share, it's sounds like a permissions problem with the file/directory. Check the permissions at that level. Also make sure the "system" has access at the file/directory level as well.

Another option to try is to check your Front Page Server Extensions and rebuild from the admin tool if needed (it's located within the IIS folder of Programs).

If none of the above answers fix the problem then select the websites on your MMC and get their properties - make sure the sites have read/write/execute permissions.

It's a combined issue.
First check the rights on the NTFS volume where the files are. Click on the volume then properties\security. Be sure that you check the box for propagation of the rights to the subdirectories. Second on IIS if you want them to use Web folders (in 2000) or some other Web Tools they have to be operators on that site not only FrontPage extension users. You can correct this by going in MMC, select the appropriate site and the click properties. There you have a page called Operators. The you can add, modify or remove users that could do special operations on that site.

Luck!.

I would check three things.
1. For the two web sites, add the groups you wish to have access to the sites under the operators tab, the default is Administrators.
2. In the Directory Security tab check that Grant Access radio button is selected and make sure you have not excluded the IP's of any computers in your Domain that these people are useing.
3. If you have fewer IP addresses bound to the network adapter than there are web sites hosted make sure that host header names are used for thetwo sites in question.

I would also move IIS4 or SQL onto another machine since you are probably seeing some performance issues with both being on the same box.

Hope this helps
