Images at startup and shutdown

By Naleen ·
Hi there, I have a Windows98 SE PC and the user that had it loaded somehow a background image that appears (tiles) when you startup and has it as the background for the login screen. Once we've logged in and you just go to desktop properties we've selected another image but that image is still there when you start up. Also when we go to shut down the PC instead of saying logging off or Windows is shutting... he's put in another image somehow that is displaying briefly. How can we get rid of these images. Hope there's someone that can help us.

There is a file on 98 machines called LOGO.SYS... Copy the logo.sys file from another good system and overwrite the offending pc's logo.sys.

Splash screen will be back to normal.

Good luck.

BTW
Here's a collection of 95/98/ME logos

Deleting or renaming Logo.sys should cause Windows to regenerate the file when the machine is rebooted.

Logo.sys is in the Root directory
LogoW.sys "Wait" is in the Windows directory
LogoS.sys "Shut down" is also in Windows

1. Start the 98 machine as usual.
2. Go to Start -> Log Off...
3. When the log on screen appears, click "Cancel".
4. Change the image.
5. Restart as usual.

Hi, thank you so much for all the answers. The info I received was a little bit wrong...sorry! It's a Millenium Edition PC and the actual Windows ME logo startup is showing briefly but then the login screen's background is that image. I've done what Answer3 suggested cancel out of the login screen and then changed the background image which worked fine, but that image is still showing when you start up. We don't have another ME PC to copy the logo.sys file from, so should it then be okay if I rename the file like Klippert suggested and then will Windows just recreate another one. And also will that take away that image? Many thanks for everybody's help.

If my memory serves me correctly, for Windows 98 and Me, the standard startup screen is built into the boot files and will be displayed UNLESS there is a logo.sys file.

If you have the Me CD, you can also use a good archive manager, or System File Checker (sfc from the run box) to extract and replace a specific file.
