VoIP

by afram In reply to implementing VoIP

Voice over IP - like having a phone call but instead of using the phone service, the voice travels over the Internet.

VoIP can be cheaper than using regular phone because you usually pay a flat rate anywhere regardless of distance. Depends on how much calling you do.

There are many ways to do it...is this personal, business?

One way is to use SKYPE - skype.com this free program will let you "call" anyone else who uses the program over the Internet for free. For a small fee you can buy SKYPE OUT that lets you call regular phones. All you need is a speaker/mike headset.

At home, some cable companies can provide the service like IO VoIP. They give you a new cable modem and you plug your phone into it. The computer can be off - just leave the cable modem on. Service is about $35/month for unlimited calls anywhere. Might be cheaper if you have a cable connection.

If it's for a business, everyone will need a VoIP phone. You usually purchase a provider who gives you a gateway server. Voice mail is usually stored as an email, so it will tie into your email server.

If you have remote offices and want to cut long distance calling you can buy a product like RAD Data's VMUX (www.radusa.com) This will give you VoIP traffic over your T1 line - very little bandwidth, but there is no quality of service.
