In-Place Upgrade from 5.0 to 5.1

By dharrison ·
Just received the Symantec 9.0 upgrade that requires Netware to be at version 5.1 sp 3.

As far as I can tell, our server is running version 5.0

Is there any way to upgrade to version 5.1 or do I need to purchase the latest (6.5) to update our system??

I am concerned - that maybe our server isn't hefty enough to handle that upgrade and would therefore require purchasing a new systems.

Couldn't find any answers on the Novell website - or by surfing the web. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You can find Server specifications for NW6.5 here:
http://www.novell.com/products/netware/sysreqs.html

But you are correct in your assessment. I buy my NetWare from Global Computer and I believe they still have NW5.1, it's worth checking out.
I currently use NW6SP4&Sp5 and would hate to go back to 5.1.
This web page lists NW5.1:
http://elitebargainsusa.com/detail.cfm?ProductID=39
as does this page:
http://www.dealtime.com/xPO-Novell_NetWare_5_1_License_Only_PC_873_001228_001

You didn't mention how many licenses you needed, assuming one server?

No,you do not have to upgrade to 6.5.

The minimum requirements for 6.5 are as follows:
1) 512 meg RAM ,it will not install with anything less.
2) a SYS volume of of 2 to 4 gigabytes
3) an Intel Pentium or AMD Athlon(no K6 allowed)

5.1 is more forgiving, but there will be issues such as backup software and other 3rd party programs.

Depending upon the number of users ,you might be better off going to the Novell Small Business server product (50 users or less for SBS 5.1 or 100 users or less for SBS 6.5)

SBS 6.5 gives you:

Zenworks
2 Node Clustering
Ifolder
Groupwise
Apache Webserver
My SQL database
NDPS/Iprint
Backup Software
Virtual Office
2nd server that you can add to tree
plus you can add xtra servers and nodes to a cluster
Branch manager (File and print appliance for satillite offices)
BorderManager
DirXML (If you have a Windows domain ,you can sync users and passwords through EDIR
iSCSI support

SBS 5.1 gives you many of the same features as above just some of the features are lower rev(Zen 3.2 instead of 4.01),no clustering ,and a limit of one server in the tree.

The cost is about the same to upgrade to 5.1 or 6.5.

As for an inplace upgrade,I don't like them .You would be better off doing a migration to another server.
