In XP-Pro unable to install Service Pack 3, getting Access Denied msg !

I have XP-Pro and very recently tried to download and install Service Pack 3 as part of Windows Automatic updates. But after the installation started and went for a while , I got the error msg, "Access Denied" and some concluding msg like, "Now your system will revert back to the original condition as before the update". FYI I am using my regular login profile which has administrator privilege. Please help as the SP3 is needed to be installed in my laptop for security reasons I suppose. Thanks.

A virus may have infiltrated your system which denies you the administrator privlidges. Although you could try downloading the installation itself and try and run it from the actual administrator account.

when you install, if it fails see if you can determine a when the process failed.

The only time I've had a problem was when the backup failed, this was because the PC had problems.

316 MB and on all the updated PC's I've installed it on it only loaded 66 MB of files. It's not like XP SP2 where there are a lot of changes, just a few minor changes and all the updates between SP2 and SP3.

I have scanned my laptop directly from the major AV websites, which reported nothing. Also recently (last week) I have uninstalled McAfee Security Suite and installed AVG 8.0 internet Security package. Both the AV regularly scanned and reported that my laptop is virus free. Do you still think I have a virus ??? I also tried the SP3 installation several times in the past one week but no good. However I did not try the installation from with "Administrator" account but I do not know how to only download the SP3 and save it in a location without Windows automatic updates which tries to install by iteself. Pls help.

and if you want to enter your administrator account when you get to the windows logon screen press CTRL + Alt + Del and type administrator in the username and the administrator password.

Remember if you do not know this password we will NOT help you crack it although in some cases there is no password

If you need to install SP3 then you will have to do a full re-install.

To make it work "sp3" then you will have to do a full re-install of Windows. Make sure you do a back up of your files etc.
First download the sp3 from here:

And select the link:
"External Mirror 2 - Checked Build".
After this burn it to a cd disk. Then wipe your drive and do a fresh install of Windows then SP2 and SP3. You will not get the errors that you are getting now do it this way. But the choice is yours.

My laptop has a OEM version of XP Pro.. It came with this Dell Inspiron laptop installed and did not come with any additional CD for XP pro. So if I wipe off my laptop I do not have a XP installation disk to reinstall the OS again. And this laptop is out of warranty from Dell, so they will not be interested to support me free. Also this laptop has tons of info which I do not want to wipe off at this stage (Its a huge and time consuming task to back off the data and certain standalone programs). Re-installation of XP will be my last resort if nothing works. Pls advice if I have to do it ultimately, how can I re-install XP Pro without a XP installation CD (this is a OEM ver from Dell). And most likely re-installation will automatically resolve the issue.
Also can you please detail me about the .exe file I have downloaded from http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Windows-XP-SP3-Download-90001.html#download_locations )External Mirror 2 - Checked Build), if that is an ISO file to be directly burned in a CD, or a standalone .exe file that installs XP SP3 directly ? - Thanks.

The file you have listed should be the Executable File to install SP3

It's a bit hard to actually look without downloading it as to what it does but if it was a ISO File the Extension would be ISO not EXE.

Before considering attempting the install. But as it's not working I would really suggest that you Backup all your Data & Settings with the File & Settings Transfer Wizard located in the main menu under Accessories, System Tools File & Settings Transfer Wizard, then attempt to use the Solution provided by M$ here

4. Save this Notepad file as Reset.cmd.
5. Double-click the Reset.cmd file to run the script.

Note This script file may take a long time to run. Additionally, you have to run this script as an administrator.
6. Install Windows XP SP3.


This should install the SP but it could just as easily wreck Windows so without a Backup in Place you run the risk of loosing all your data. The above does work but as I have only needed to do it once I can not be sure that there are not any problems associated with it but if M$ is correct even a Clean Rebuild from the Dell Recovery Partition may not allow you to install SP3 successfully.

Recovery Disks

You may need to burn recovery disks from the machine. This should have been done as soon as the computer was purchased. Other then that a set of recovery disks or Windows XP CD should have come with the machine.

Also you have a recovery partition on your machine that when triggered at the startup just before windows boots it will load the recovery screen. Not sure but my toshiba laptop the button is F10

Well according the M$ this is only supposed to affect HP Computers

With AMD CPU's but I've seen it affect a model of Acer with Intel CPU's. According to M$'s Official Lie this only happens because SP3 is attempted to be applied to a AMD CPU Computer where the Slipstreamed Recovery Disc was made with a Intel CPU and a Intel Driver is preventing the AMD CPU for functioning correctly. Read the M$ Knowledge Base Article here and follow the directions for Method 3 to cure this issue.

Of course have your Recovery Disc handy and perform a Full Data & Setting Backup before proceeding. Sorry but this is the simplest solution that I know that works here and as SP3 isn't necessary as it is only a collection of Patches that will have already been applied and some Networking Utilities to enable connecting to a Vista Computer easier it's not necessary. You can install a Service Pack Blocking Tool Kit to prevent seeing any notification about SP3 again it is available from M$ here
