Install WIN98 from hard drive not CD

By gweb09 ·
I'd like to copy WIN 98 to a clean hard drive and then do the install from there instead of the CD. I'm not certain of all the DOS commands.

Make sure then you have a boot diskette. Check www.bootdisk.com for that.
Boot from the diskette, and make a partition using FDISK (so check first if FDISK.EXE is on the diskette). Restart the PC afterwards
Then format that partition: FORMAT C:/S (so check FORMAT.EXE is on the diskette as well)
So, now you have the disk bootable. Next (this is not really required, it is just for speed of booting), make a directory on your C:-drive, for the DOS files from your diskette, and copy those files:
MD C:\DOS (or any other name you like)
COPY A:\*.* C:\DOS

Next is the tricky bit. You'll need a driver for your CDROM, and that can vary, depending on the brand and the type (IDE? SCSI?). Just suppose it is called IDECD.SYS (it will always be something.SYS), and you have copied it to the C:\DOS directory you created earlier. You'll have to make a config.sys file in the root of your C:-drive:
C:
CD \
COPY CON CONFIG.SYS
DEVICE=C:\DOS\IDECD.SYS /D:CDROM01
(press Ctrl+z to close thefile and save it)

Next, you'll have to make DOS aware of the additional disk (=the CD), in a file called Autoexec.bat:
COPY CON AUTOEXEC.BAT
C:\DOS\MSCDEX /D:CDROM01
(press Ctrl+z to close the file and save it)

And restart your PC. When being loaded MSCDEX (so check for the presence of MSCDEX.EXE on your original boot diskette as well) will tell you which drive-letter it uses. Most likely the first available, so
Then copy the contents of the CD (or a part of it, depends on what you want) to the harddisk:
MD C:\WIN98 (to make a new folder)
COPY D:\WIN98\*.* C:\WIN98 (to copy everything)

Then go to the Win98 directory on your harddisk, and execute the setup:
CD \WIN98
SETUP
