Installing 2nd CD-Rom problem

By garvald ·
I have tried to install a 2nd CD-Rom drive into a P II machine with Windows 95, on the 2nd IDE channel. The unit is recognised in the BIOS, and as a drive when in Windows, but Windows thinks that any CD put is is an Audio type. This affected both CDdrives when I tried installing them both onto the 2nd channel.
I have tried removing auto-insert notification, but that has not cured the problem. There are no indications in the Motherboard specs of any jumpers etc which might be to blame.

I would be grateful for any ideas.

Check out this article for a file download that may help. If any spaces appear in the URL after you paste it make sure to close them up.

Thanks, I'm not using any changers, just 2 ordinary CD drives, so I don't think this will help, a few other leads from the KB articles though, so may lead to a solution

Installing 2nd CD-Rom problem

win95 can get confused when new hard ware is added and the old hardware has not been removed properly. you can remove devices from the device manager in normal mode but a thread can be left in safe mode preventing windows from detecting/configuring new hardware. I found this manly in the win95. Boot to safe mode and remove any devices that are not installed. A good example of this problem thread can be seen mainly with monitors, A new monitor is added to a system without the old one being removed from the device manager, the old monitor does not appear in the device manager in normal mode but when you enter safe mode you will see the old and new monitor still loaded in safe mode.

Thanks, you were right, there were a lot of extra entries in Safe mode device manager, but removing them didn't help.

Useful point to remember though!

Thanks
