installing a second hard drive

by VinnyD In reply to installing a second hard ...

Most computers have 2 ide interfaces.
One usually connects to the your hard drive and one to the CD-Rom drive.

To put a 2nd hard drive in make sure you jumper it as a slave and connect it to the other connector your current hard drive is on.

Then you will need to partition it and format the drive.

New hard drives may come with a Disk Manager software that does the install for you. If it does not, then you can go to the mfg's web site and download one.

Good luck.

First, define what you want to do with the second drive.
There is a good article on partitioning philosophy at www.aumha.org

You may want to partition the drive as a single extended dos partition to keep your existing drive letters if your existing drive is partitioned into several drives.

Then, verify that you have enough power to run a second hard drive. The needs vary by what other devices you have. Depending on your CPU and other drives, you may need either a 250 or 300 watt supply to handle the extra drive.

In my opinion, it always works best if the second drive is from the same mfg as the first.

Download the mfg data for both drives, if you do not allready have it.

1. Create a startup disk if you do not have one.
2. Shut down and unplug the PC.
3. See if your drive cable has a second connector. If not, you will need a new cable.
4. Reset the jumpers on your existing drive for master w/slave present.
5. Set the jumpers on the new drive for slave.
6. Install the drives and cables.
7. boot from the startup floppy.
8. At the A: prompt, type fdisk and press enter.
(for details on the fdisk commands, check out www.fdisk.com/fdisk)
9. Select the second drive.
10. If you want a primary DOS partition on this drive (D:) start by creating the primary dos partition.
11. Then, create the extended DOS partition if needed.
12. Create logical drives on the extended dos partition as needed.
13. Exit fdisk, remove the floppy, and reboot.

Formatthe drive(s), and your set.
Note: if your CD drive is drive it will now be at least E:, or higher if you partitioned the new drive into more than 1 drive.

1st turn off your computer, unplugged power cable from cpu. check your current hardisk cable whether it has 1 slot / 2 slot for HDD(normally 2)
if only 1 better get a new cable so you can use 1 cable for 2 HDD. plug the power cable to your new HDD and then the data cable. make sure you set the new HDD jumper to slave(read the manual) and then turn on your computer, if BIOS doesnt detect your new HDD automatically go to BIOS setting by pressing del and find autodetect for HDD.
if your new HDD not formatted...you can use format /s d: or e: or f:(depend) have fun
