Installing BDC.....

By steve.archer ·
How can I configure a BDC when the PDC is the other side of a leased line and all PCs on the LAN can see the PDC except the BDC can't? With me?

An NT4 Server must see the PDC during the installation phase in order to become a BDC.

If your leased line supports TCP/IP, you can assign an IP address, subnet mask and default route consistent with the rest of the network to the new server. Then, during the installation (assuming the PDC has TCP/IP configured correctly, too) the BDC will be able to talk to the PDC for security data.

In Windows 2000 server, you can do the installation without making a BDC during the install phase. Then, if you upgrade your PDC to Win2000, you can set up directory services, and have the new server join the tree. It, the newer server, effectively becomes a BDC replicating security data. At any time it can take over the "primary" role if necessary by using the "dcpromo" utility.

If you installed the BDC without having access to the PDC you created a new domain. You will need to check your configuration and reinstall Windows NT. If the BDC is from a different domain you also must reinstall Windows NT.

During the installation process you will be able to determine if the domain can be seen. If you cannot see the domain then your machine is misconfigured. Check your TCP/IP settings. If they are OK then the most likely problem is a faulty network card or network card driver. Download the latest driver and then use that in the installation process (Press Have Disk when specifying network card)

This is rather simple. Create an LMHOST file with entry for the PDC on a floppy. Install NT and during the network setup, configure the server for the local LAN settings, including the gateway to the other side of the leased line. Then under WINS tab in the network configuration window, there's a check box for importing LMHOST file. Put a check mark there and NT will ask for the floppy, which you created earlier. Once it is done, the BDC will find the PDC.
I hope this helps.
