installing multiple versions of xp

By paulecheck ·
Hello Every One,
For developement purposes, I would like to install two versions of XP pro on one hard drive (laptop)and in separate partitions. I have successfully installed one XP pro to the C:\ (fat32) using full install option (running Win 98) . I then attempt to install "full install option" a different xp pro copy by running xp setup while running the first xp version (tried with and without service pack 1). During install, I choose a different partition (fat32) and I gave the computer the same name during first install (after failed install I tried a different computer name).
The new xp pro showed up on the OS loader and worked. The orginal xp pro would not boot:
1st error \system32\ hal.dll not found or corrupted (to repair I extract from xp cd)
2nd error \system32\ntoskrnl.exe not found or corupted (to repair I extract from xp cd)
3rd error, load needed DLLs for kernel.

Any help would be appreciated.
Best Regards,
Paul

Option one
install win98 on the first partition then install winxp on the second paratation.
start win98 and try to update the first partition.

option two
install winxp on the first partition and copy the image to the second partation using Drive Image. Before you make an image make sure the all service packs are installed, network, etc and boot magic.

good luck I have not done this, but it might work

You can try this too.
You can have parttions one to run your testing on.
the second partition to save the image for your testing.
You will first make a master image, then a image for the testing that you need for that image.
You can alway replace the image that you need.
With several different images you can replace them. Do not forget the svae your images, too.
A 10 to 15 GB image using Power Quest DriveImage
should save or replace an image from start to finish in less the 15 minutes.good luck

Hi,
Option 1 worked for me.
You mentioned Power Quest Driveimage. How does this compare to Driveworks Image commander by V-com?
Thanks for the help.

The possibility of the errors being caused by second setup over writing the system files of the first setup, this would be a difficult task it seems since XP is designed to be setup on one computer, the operating system is detecting the same hardware due to Microsoft coded authenication.
You could try extracting from the cd.

Hi,
Tried to extract from cd but each time I exracted a driver that was corrupted XP asked for another driver. you are right about XP being difficult to setup a double installation.

Try Vmware or Virtual PC.

It allows for multiple OS's
on the same machines.
You can get eval versions on their websites.

Curious:
Are you using the same license for both installations?
Have you activated the first installation and are now trying to install with different hardware (partition)?
