Installing new hard drive

By dliby ·
I have Netware 5.0 running on a Compaq 5500 Proliant Server. The Server has 9 - 18.2 gig ultra2 scsi drives. I want to add one more 18.2 gig drive as a spare. The new drive actually is not new. It came out of a Windows NT 4 server. There is data on the drive. Can I just put the drive in the Novell server without deleting or formating it?

i say: yep. but foolishly, i haven't asked what file format. can netware read that format? it won't try to boot off it unless you give it id lower than boot drive.

The Netware server has Raid 5. The drive that came out of the NT server also was in Raid 5.

Logically speaking. As soon as you add the drive to your Raid array, you will be configuring it as a standby or spare drive. The Raid controller will then handle the drive without you having to format or delete it.
There is sufficient intelligence built up in Raid controllers to handle that. I have swapped many drives and added additional drives which have come from non Novell servers and have never had an issue. I would however suggest that you start your Netware server with the -NA command as not to mount any other volumes than your sys volume.
I hope that this helps.
