Because Oracle 8i won't run from the CD on a P4 PC. We just went through the same problem. Our Network administrators copied the CD to the network and we were able to install the Oracle 8i client on a P4 PC. The file used for install is in the install\win32 folder.

you can also install Oracle client 9i as an option. It has backward capability so it can utilize 8i databases, but runs just fine on a PIV PC with 2000. We just went through this at work and it is running with no problems. You can download Oracle9i Client from Oracle.

Here are two options as a workaround.
Solution 1.

2. Obtain patch number 1507768 from Metalink

3. unzip the patch

4. unjar the contents

5. Go to the directory

.\cd\Disk1\stage\Components\oracle.swd.jre\1.1.7.30/1\DataFiles\Expan ded\jre\win32\bin\symcjit.dll

rename symcjit.dll to symcjit.dll.ori

6. Invoke OUI and install OUI to disk

cd ./cd/Disk1/stage/win32/setup.exe

6. Use the installed OUI to install the RDBMS

7. Invoke OUI from the start menu, and install RDBMS software.

Solution 2.

8. Create a temporary directory on your server.

9. Copy the contents of the Oracle REBMS Server CD to the temporary directory created in step 1.

10. Search the directory structure created in step 1 for the existence of the filename symcjit.dll.

11. Rename each copy of the symcjit.dll to symcjit.old.

12. Run the setup.exe from the \install\win32 directory and install Oracle 8.1.x.
