Installing Win98 on existing NT4 Workst.

By pclifford ·
I have NT4(service pack 5)Workstation running on my PC. I would like to create a dual boot with Win98 without damaging the existing NT installation. The drive is currently partitioned as follows:
C: 2GB FAT
4GB NTFS
Please help!! I want to get this done as painlessly as possible!!

Installing Win98 on existing NT4 Workst.

Here's a note I found elsewhere (I forget where) - it should work.
The orginal dual-boot tip won't fit in the answer so if you want it, e-mail me.

Tip follows:
Since we wrote the original dual-boot tip, we have found a utility, BootIt Direct, that does exactly what we want - we can now boot Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 98 on Drive C: (HD 0) and NT 4 on Drive (HD 1).

This little beauty will let you boot just about anything you want. You simply hide all the partitions but theone you want to install a system to, and then start your installation. This is by far the easiest boot manager we have used.

You can find BootIt Direct at http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/PRODUCTS.HTM. You can try it for 30 days and if you decide to register it, the price is $14.95.

You can triple boot Windows NT 4.0 Workstation, Windows 2000 Professional, and Windows 98 using the procedure described in the last tip. Install in order:
1. NT 4
2. Windows 2000
3. Windows 98

You can set up a partition for Windows 2000 from the NT 4 Disk Manager. Then you install 2000 and, finally, run FDISK and create your FAT 32 partition. Create boot32.p32 and copy it to both the NT4 and Win 2000 partitions.

You will get some weird drive letters using this method. This isn't a problem as a rule, but we did run across a few programs that refused to deal with Drive H: as a boot-drive letter. That's why we went searching for a boot manger. Now all our boot drives are C - just as nature (and Microsoft) intended.

First I highly recommend you install win98 to a clean system and then install winnt. If you can't do that then try this:

Install win98(SE if possible) from the cd rom on the FAT partition. DON'T MAKE IT FAT32!!! After successfully installing, run the NT repair utility to replace the boot record on drive C: NT will recognize during the repair that you have win98 and set you up for dual boot.

Let me know if you experience any problems. These dual and triple boot utilities are great when they work, but I've found very little knowledgeable support when they fail.

Actually all I had to do was be sure there was enough disk space on C: and I just installed Win98. The machine set itself up to dual boot! I didn't have to run the repair utility.

I seem to recall seeing an article on here on TechRepublic in the last few weeks on this very subject. I recall that it was a fairly simple solution. I have checked my files but can't locate it. Try using their search function.

Good luck.

In reference to the answer from Canoo. The artilce in question is titled
"Computer Werks: Dual-booting Windows 9x on an existing NT workstation
Jun 7, 1999"
If you use the search function here on Tech republic and search for "Dual Boot" it is the first one in the list. There are also others there as well. Hope this helps!
