Integration of Software

By venishan ·
Hi all

I have been tasked with setting up over 1000 pc's with a new program. each workstation has to be manually configured, and this invloves following about 14 steps to setup 14 different applications eg step 1 - Adobe Acrobat
step 2 - Winzip
etc

this becomes more of a bother than anything else, what I need to find out is whether there is a program out there that I can use to integrate all of these "steps" where there will be only one executable file that when click will installed each and every application one after the other.

Please help guys.

Thanx

If the PCs are part of a roll-out of brand new PCs, all with identical (or nearly identical) hardware configuration, you could use Symantec's Ghost program. This allows you to create one "template" PC with everything loaded, dump an image file of that PC onto your server, and then distribute that image to all of the other PCs directly over the network. If the PCs are existing PCs that need additional applications loaded, look at Seagate's Winstall product - this allows you also to create a "template" PC, but it's designed just to dump individual applications rather than a completely full load of OS and applications together, which is what Ghost does. Hope this helps!

Sorry - Wininstall is not owned by Seagate anymore; it went to Veritas and then was bought by a company called OnDemand Software - www.ondemandsoftware.com. It's also actually part of the Windows 2000 operating system, known there as "Remote Installation Services". So, if you have any Win2K servers, you might be able to use them to do this. Hope this helps!

I have used a product called Wise Installation Package. It allows you to repackage the installation of an application with your appropriate customization including registry entries. It is an easy-to-use, script-based installation tool that developers and administrators reliable installations to meet a wide range of requirements. Whether you need to quickly create a simple, reliable install, or you have advanced requirements such as Internet/intranet distribution, Windows CE installs, or application self-healing, Wise Installation System can do it for you. The learning curve takes about a day to get familiar with the options. I have rolled out software using this through the creation of a Windows MSI package. It works great.
