On a peer to peer network, what's the best way to prevent a user from using the internet but allow him full access to file sharing, in a way that he has no access to change the settings back to where he can use the internet?

On a Linksys router (which supplies you internet access from a dsl or cable connection), you can actually specify which pc's to allow/not allow onto the internet. In blocking this specific pc, you'd cut off their internet access but they'd still be able to talk to other machines in the peer to peer network. Not sure if your router at the office has that basic functionlity, you might try that.

There are some other things you might try.. like setting up an internal proxy server and only allowing it out to the internet. Then block everything else. There is a way for you to disallow the user from changing the proxy settings on the machine (so in other words, on the machine you don't want to have internet access - just don't configure a proxy server). Of course, I forget how to prevent a user from changing the lan settings within IE but I do know there is a reg hack for it.

There are 2 samples above, I am sure that there are many more for you to try..

Good luck.

You may be able to block internet access by MAC address on your firewall if you have one.

or

If you're using static addressing set the gateway address to loopback (127.0.0.1) and remove DNS entries.

or

Remove TCP/IP and use NETBEUI or IPX instead. You'll need to enable the relevent protocols on all other hosts to allow file sharing in this case.

In both cases you can then apply a policy to lock the network control panel.
