      How is He connecting?

With a Dial Up, A DSL through a CAT5 Cable or USB Or a Cable straight through a LAN Port?

I recently had one owner complaining that he couldn’t connect to the Internet from home through IE or FF and he had forgotten to first make the dial up connection. I wish they where all that simple. 😉

If it’s through a DSL or ADSL connection or even a Cable is the modem actually plugged in and working? Even if all the lights are on I would suggest that he unplug it for about 20 seconds and plug it back in and try again. Sometimes power surges scramble these units and unplugging then for a short time cures the problem.

If none of that works ask can he pickup any E-Mail if he can then it has to be a Security Setting in IE & FF that is preventing the connection.

If he can’t it will mean a trip out there to see if there is actually an active Net Connection with a NB or something similar. They you’ll know where you need to start to begin to work from.

theconnection is DSL and I can ping google.com from the cmd prompt. I have figured out the problem norton antivirus trial ran out and some one had deleted the program files in the program folder so no way to launch norton internet security. I downloaded norton uninstall tool and now everything works.

        Thanks

When you say you can ping addresses do you mean IP or URLs? We should also get the type of connection, I agree. It’s this sort of thing that almost requires a visit, though.

If it’s a broadband connection have you power cycled the modem and router, if any? I’d verify the router and PC are both grabbing addresses properly. If addresses are all OK, you just can’t resolve DNS and there’s another system on the same connection that’s OK then you probably have a broken LSP such as NewDotNet or a web accelerator.

I’ve been seeing NewDotNet installs lately that don’t have the proper uninstall. This leads me to believe there may be an affiliate pushing NDN installs improperly; I don’t know if they use affiliates but it seems that way at the moment.

To isolate a broken LSP you must be at the PC. Take LSPFix with you (link below) and run it. If there’s a broken one then LSPFix will detect that and auto-add it to the Remove side of things.

I had a PC where IE got messed up by spyware.
could not get to the net to install new. Happily I had copy of Opera or Firefox around. Other browser connected so I knew it was something in OS, not the net connection.

I was able to goto ms site and download new version. They seem to have gotten better with their site working with other browsers. You can always test the net connection with another pc, such as a portable.

What antivirus are you/they using? And is it up to date, is this a company computer? Is it set up so they can not install any programs and is activex turned off? It sounds like they have a IE trojan, one that installs itself and works with out them knowing whays going on.
I would take the computer and leave it off the network, run Spybot search and distroy, hijack this, stinger and still not be sure its clean. Try running CWshredder to see if you can get back IE. But I would just blow away the drive and reinstall to be sure.

      Hi,

There are many reasons behind the problem that why your browser do not connect to the Internet. One of the main reasons is the disabling of the acceptance of cookies and the users may not be aware that these are one of the reasons behind the problem. Another reason can be the adapter problem. The cables must be checked and the adapter diagnostic program must be run. It may be a bad adapter, so it is better to replace it. Proxy settings are also one of the major problems which lead the browser for not connecting to the Internet. Even sometimes, computer viruses lead to the problem of browser not connecting to the Internet. If the Internet service provider is facing any problem, like if the server is down, then again it leads the browser not getting connected to the Internet.
