internet connection troubles

By bulldoggy_27 ·
I can be online from 5 -15 minutes and then can loose connection. I am on a dsl line. I can get disconnected in middle of download, timing out not a possible scenario. Will run ipconfig /release and /renew and then be ok for up to 15 minutes possibly. I have started over on a fresh install and format of HD to see if problem can be recreated and it can recreate itself. After dropped connection cannot ping anything but 127.0.0.1. Apparently ISP doesnt seem to have a clue. Any ideas Please????

Since you reformated and reinstalled, it doesn't sound like a system problem. I would have the line and plug checked. I had that problem on a dial up, and ended up re-wiring my phone outlet.

I think the problem is in the DSL line or connection. Did your phone company give you a line filter for each phone in your home? This cuts down greatly on the crosstalk between your voice and DSL wires. Sometimes the DSL comes in on the SAME wire pair as your voice.

Do you connect through a router or direct to the modem.

Next time it drops. Open a command window and ping the modem. If it responds do a trace route to yahoo.com.

Your modem could be dropping packets. You can request a line test. They will come out to your place and do a sustained data transfer test and monitor for dropped packets.

When they did mine they found a bad filter in a cabinet.

Good Luck Lee
