Internet Download - "Throttle Down"!

By markawolter ·
I live out in the country side and my only choice for high speed Internet access is Satellite. DSL is not available. Thus, I currently have a DirecWay Satellite system. The upload speeds are horrible? somewhere between 2Kbs to 20Kbs! The download speeds can be awesome?. 400Kbs! However, on almost all downloads, it starts out fast and then slowly (sometime quickly) it ?throttles down? to 2Kbs to 10Kbs! Why does it do this!? It drives me nuts. It does the same thing whether I use a download manager or not! Please help me understand what?s going on. Thanks, Mark

Best advice I can give you is to contact DirecWay support and discuss with them.

DirecWay states that everything is OK and functional!

With Satellite there are so many variables so the best thing that you can do is contact the company who is providing the connection and get them to sort it out for you.

Generally speaking though upload speeds are far slower than download speeds. This is to do with the upload signal being restricted in power.

If this has just started it could be a piece of hardware going bad or a bad connection to the antenna or any other of things. The most obvious is that the antenna isn't pointing the right way and is not getting a clear connection to the Satellite but then again other things like mountains and Atmospheric conditions can affect this as well.

I don't think it is a hardware failure. It's been doing this since the day we got it. The company claims my connectivity is optimal. So, I think it has something to do with the server that I am downloading from. I mostly download giant game demos and I'm tired of them being throttled down to 10Kbs rendering it a 20 hour download! I have yet to hear a good answer to my question.

Since you don't mention what your downloading, I'm going to assume it's via P2P.

If that's the case DirecWay may be as you put it throttling your download speeds, to solve it use non-standard ports, any up in the 49000+ range will work. The other thing is to change the ports used regularly.

I don't believe I can adjust the ports on my Satellite modem. I mostly download giant game demos and I'm tired of them being throttled down to 10Kbs rendering it a 20 hour download! I have yet to hear a good answer to my question.

Plenty of good answers to a question that did't include a very pertinent point.

Go adjust your attitude and maybe you will get some help.

Direcway is limiting you because you are a bandwidth hog. Pay for a business connection if you want more bandwidth.

Yikes!!! A scathing rebuke!
Well, I cannot "pay for a business connection". There is no other option. As I stated I'm so far out in the country.... no cable... no DSL... no options. I can't afford a T1 or a T3, if that's what you're suggesting. I think I need to hear from another DirecWayer....
Somebody else want to give a try? <grin>

Well have you tried another server and option to download? You could be right that the server at the other end is the problem so the obvious thing to do would be to try downloading something from elsewhere. Have you tried this?

How does a Windows Update go? Is it fast or slow?

You also have to remember that with Satellite you do have limited bandwidth and it very well could be with big downloads the Satellite owner is restricting the available bandwidth to you so that others can continue to get a service. What you do have to remember is that these things cost a tremendous amount of money and have a limited capability of transferring data so your ISP is probably toward the bottom of the list when it comes to bandwidth particularly if the Satellite is running to near capacity.

Satellites generally have a limited life expediency as well so the owners have to squeeze every single cent possible out of them to pay for the things construction and insertion into orbit and then make a profit.Just to insert one of these things into orbit is several hundred million $ with no guarantee that it will not be destroyed on the launch pad or before it gets into position if it even survives the launch. There are so many things that can and do go wrong it is a really chancy business to be in if you are not a Government agency.

I have tried many servers and they all do the same thing.
I think the Windows updates are fast.
Please, I would like to hear from another DirecWayer.
