On a user’s Windows 95 desktop, the Internet Explorer has changed to some other icon. How do you change it back to the e?

if you have Explorer 4 or 5, do the following:
      right click on the icon
      click on properties
      click on Advanced tab
uncheck the Show explorer icon on desktop
      click apply
      restart the computer
do the same again, but now check the Show explorer..
      restart again
should solve it. if not – install TweakUI and use the options there.

You could also make a shortcut to it and change the icon in the shortcut if answer one dosen’t work out for you.

      To fix this problem:

      1. Run “Regedit.exe”
      2. Find [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{FBF23B42-E3F0-101B-8488-00AA003E56F8}\DefaultIcon]
      3. Create a new string named “Oldicon” and copy the value from “(Default)” into “Oldicon”
      4. Edit “(Default)” to be “C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\iexplore.exe,-32528”
      5. Close Regedit and refresh your desktop.

This creates a backup then changes the default icon for Internet Explorer to icon # 32528 in C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\iexplore.exe.

The same thing happened to me. (Running NT4.0 sp5, and using IE5.0) If you’re running IE5.0 I believe this should work:

      Open Control Panel
      Open Add/Remove Programs
      Select Microsoft Internet Explorer
      Select Add/Remove command button

A dialog box should pop up to ask you if you want to:
      a) Add a component
      b) Repair Internet Explorer
      c) Restore Previous Windows configuration.

I selected Option ‘B’ and it rebuilt ie5.0 with the correct icons.
