I already reinstalled IE6, and I'm getting the same error. Netscape works fine. Reloading the OS is the absolute last resort. I'm not there yet.

First, check which version of IE you're running by going to Help, About Microsoft Internet Explorer. If IE won't run at all, look for Windows update files on your drive and see if there is a setup file in there so that you can re-install the IE. Should be something like ie6setup.exe. Might be ie5...

Reboot after re-installing. See if you can get it to run and go to the Windows Update site for any critical updates that may apply and install.

I don't think that installing Netscape will help resolve issues with a corrupted IE installation.

Reinstalling the OS is an option if all other methods of troubleshooting don't work.

Here are several possibilities:

Microsoft article Q276459, “Error Message: explore Caused an Invalid Page Fault in Module Kernel32.dll" When You Close an Internet Explorer Window”

SYMPTOMS:
When you close an Internet Explorer browser window, you may receive the following error message:

Iexplore caused an Invalid Page Fault in module Kernel32.dll

CAUSE:
This behavior can occur if the McAfee VirusScan version 5.x Internet Scan and E-mail Scan tools are enabled. This issue might occur with only one Internet Explorer or Outlook Express window open, but happens most often when you close one of several open windows. (I've seen this happen with Norton as well.)

RESOLUTION:
Please contact McAfee (or Norton) to inquire about a possible patch or upgrade that resolves this issue.

WORKAROUND:
To work around this issue, disable the Internet Scan, E-mail Scan, and Internet Filter functionality in the McAfee (or Norton) software.

Microsoft article Q253364, “Error Messages If You Install Internet Explorer 5.5 and Gator Software”

SYMPTOMS:
After you install Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5, you may receive the following error messages: On a computer running either Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98:

IExplore Caused an Invalid Page Fault in Module Kernel32.dll

CAUSE:
This behavior occurs if you are running Gator softwareby Gator.com 2000.

RESOLUTION:
To resolve this issue, uninstall Gator:
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Add/Remove Programs.
3. Click Remove to uninstall Gator software.

NOTE: Another method of resolution is by removing the GoZilla software on a Windows 98 SE machine running IE 5.5. Gozilla is software similar to the Gator; both are download managers.

STATUS:
Gator.com 2000 has released Gator version 1.5.2.5 to resolve this problem. For additional information, view the following Gator Web site:

Microsoft article Q187965, “explorer caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll”

SYMPTOMS:
When you attempt to start Internet Explorer or Outlook Express on a Windows 95 or Windows 98-based computer, your computer may stop responding (hang), and you may receive one of the following error messages:

Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll.

Iexplore caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll.

CAUSE:
This behavior can occur if your password list (PWL) file is damaged.

RESOLUTION:
To resolve this issue, use the following steps:
1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders .
2. In the Named box, type *.pwl, and then click Find Now .
3. In the list of found files, right-click each file, and then click Delete . Repeat step 3 until all of the .pwl files are deleted.
4. On the File menu, click Close.
5. Restart the computer. The password list files are re-created automatically when you log on to Windows.
