Ip address change

By judson ·
I was asked to chage my internal IP addressing sheme by my local ISP (we have multiple outside IPs that are conflicting) How do I go about changing the scope (ie from 192.168.x.x to 10.42.x.x). I'm also wanting to place my dhcp server on a differentmachine. Wouls it be best to build the second machine, install and setup DHCP on it with the new scope, shut down the original DHCP server, install the new DHCP server ,re-boot the network? P.S.I'm running AD. Thanks in advance

Ip address change

There is really no need to create another DHCP server. You will experience some minor disruption unless you do this outside of normal business hours.

I would go about this in this way:
1. If your servers have fixed IP addresses, change them touse the new addressing scheme.
2. Create a new scope with the new addressing scheme. (DHCP servers can have multiple scopes active at the same time).
3. Delete the old scope.
4. If this is done during business hours, you will need to get all your DHCP clients to renew their leases. If done after business hours, all clients will automatically be renewed when logging on the next morning (assuming all computers are logged off at night.

Hope this helps.

Follow answer #1 but on Wed start sending e-mails warning that on friday the change will be made and to turn off their PC for the weekend, thursday remind them, friday give exact time changes will be made. This will help preclude the people that don't shut down/reboot their PC over the weekend from calling on monday to be told to reboot their PC.

Not a bad idea to send out the e-mail ...most employees don't reboot until I tell them to (IE> did you re-boot .. no... do that and call me back) Thanks for the tip
