is LINUX enough like UNIX?

By claduca ·
Our Xerox DocuTech 135, which is installed on our network as a "printer", appears to be Unix-driven. We are running a WinNT4.0 server with Novell Netware 3.11 and have no problem in sending jobs to the "printer". We wonder: if we could communicate more directly with the Xerox, could we save files that we scanned into it back on to the server? Is Linux close enough to UNIX that we might be able to do this?

Yes..The linux kernel is based on the root of unix. Plus Linux can be configured to do almost all things given the user ability. Most of the commands are about the same, but you may have to get some cheap utilities to help out in the gui mode.

Absolutely. The actual nitty-gritty that runs the LINUX system (referred to as the "Kernel" by webheads and linux geeks like me) is actually taken directly from one of the older versions of UNIX. To maximize your chances, you might want to make sure that you are using Red Hat linux due to the increased capabilities that red hat provides.

In otherw words, yes, LINUX is enough like UNIX to work with the printer.

I have never used the Xerox system you mention. But our Canon CPC machines use Fiery servers that can use a software driver on 95/NT machines to retrieve scanned documents.. Surely Xerox must have something similar. If you can Telnet into the server then the direct approach will also work..
