Is there an easy way to repair SAM hive?

By guero13 ·
ThinkPad running XP Home Edition reboots endlessly >path to lsass.exe not found< The Repair Console won't work because SAM is corrupt, asking for a nonexistant password.
I now have the HDD running on another XP computer, no virus detected by Malwarebytes. Is there an application available other than the RegEditor to repair/replace the SAM hive? It looks like there are plenty of restore points available.

Thanks a lot, I'll look for these tools. A SystemRestore is exactly what I was looking for.
But the hard drive died in the ThinkPad after I did a chkdsk on it & then copied some old registry hives into the config. It just disappeared. Had a lot of errors.

ERD Commander was/is one of the must-have tools so you can boot into the pc system and copy those system files from the repair folder to fix the corrupted files..

Cheers :)
