Helpful Hints for IT

Without a specific question.....

IT stands for Information Technology ,or as we like to call it in the help desk biz....Idiot Tutoring.

Helpful hints would include....
Learn to like coffee, mountain dew..or JOLT
Poptarts are brainfood
learnto type while you're talking on the phone..


Now,,did you want to ask a question???

Learn to type 60WPM with one hand (left or right) allowing you to type and eat at the same time.

Learn how to insult the incompetant without them knowing.

and seriously,

Learn all you can all the time. You always know too little and someone is always trying to take your job. (a little paranoia in a world out to get you is just plain common sense!)

I find the best policy is to just not answer the phone. It's amazing how few troubleshooting requests you get!

'Good' approach

Not answering the phone is a very 'good' way for avoiding troubleshooting calls as long as the users are glued to their chairs and can't contact you physically.

So... don't answer the phone and make sure that your support office is in a completely different building than the rest of the organization. If absolutely necessary, use attack dogs to protect the IT assets in your support office.

rule no. 1 - the boss is never wrong

rule no. 2 - if the boss is wrong, see rule no. 1

rule no. 3 - don't do what you can't undo later if necessary.

rule no. 4 - it's never too late to make a backup until it's too late.

rule no. 5 - only give out your password if you are changing it immediately after you give it out.

rule no. 6 - document all stack dumps.
