It takes minutes to login with WindowsME

By janscharp ·
Hi,

I hung a Sony Vaio on a NT network. The login goes fairly quick, but when I want to go to a directory on the server, it takes minutes before I can see the content of that directory. Again, if I want to go a level deeper it takes minutes to see the content of the directory. I use TCP/IP to connect to the internet with a calblemodem via the network. I use netbui to connect to the network.

Thanks in advance for your answer.

If the computer is on a large network Netbui may be the problem. If you have more than 25 or so computers on the network try using TCP/IP.

I cannot use TCP/IP because the addresses are generared by a dhcp-server over which I don't have any control. There are also some computers who aren't connected to that dhcp-server.

When you are using multiple protocols, your machine will try name resolution on each protocol until it finds one which works.

Try putting an entry for the server in the LMHOSTS file with the #PRE and #DOM: tags, and also put an entry for it in HOSTS.

Good luck.

Thanks for your answer. I am going to look into is. But I don't think that this will help because I depend on a dhcp-server over which I don't have any control. The IP-addresses are generated by the 'internetprovider'. If it helped me I shall call the quiestion answered by you. Thanks again.

Dear Jan,
It sounds like you have fast hardware, so I
think that the transmission is in a format
that requires lots of changes to the
"packets" being transmitted. This is easy
for me to say, but I think that you should
compare the format thatpackets are
transmitted with the format that netbui
accepts. Packet switching involves about 8
fields that need to be compatible with each
other. A Vaio with NT might need quite a bit
of configuring !! Call this number 1 800 936
4900 ( hit "0 when connected ) for
Microsoft. Try, but the best solution might
be to subscribe to different services....good
luck !!! Johnny
