Check out the JAVA books offered by O'Reilly Publishing.

I have found their books to be well written and very useful.

You can also check out Tech Republic's sister site www.builder.com.com
They have a list of recommended books and resources.
You might even want to sign up for the JAVA e-mail.

If you want to learn each and every corner of java then go with the "Java Complete Reference" McGrowHill. You can view the TOC at

Don't anyone laugh but the best book for a beginner is "Java For Dummies."

I find Bruce Eckel's "Thinking in Java, 3rd Edition" - a very good book for beginners.

The Best part is you can download the whole book (http://eongames.com/eckel/TIJ-3rd-edition4.0.zip)
that way it's FREE for you!!

Happy Programming :)
