Join the Pink Ribbon Brigade… Again!

Locked

by tig2 ·

For the second year, I am walking the Breast Cancer 3 Day. This walk raises funds and awareness of a killer that we can stop through early detection and dedication to a cure.

Last year, many of you walked with me for 20 miles, three days in a row. You heard about the training and you knew what the effort looked like.

So very many of you have supported this with me.

I won’t name names. I will say that the peers of TR raised $1050.01 to get me on top of my original goal- $5000. With your help, I surpassed that goal. I am currently at $5760.01. That amount represents the National average for ONE chemotherapy treatment for ONE person, uninsured or underinsured. The average chemo protocol is 6 treatments. And the penny is the seed for next years fundraising- from a loving peer. Thank you.

Last year, I asked people to step up the week of the walk. This year, I am asking you to step up now- work is a HUGE chunk of my time and walking for training is even bigger as we get closer.

Please choose to change your current avatar to a pink ribbon for the MONTH of August. I will be walking the 60 over the weekend (Geekend?) of Aug 24, 25, 26. Our current route has us within a mile of the collapsed 35W bridge. How wonderful to carry a message of life in the wake of that devastation!

Please walk with me in a celebration of life and 60 miles of respect for the angels who have gone before us. Join me for another 60 miles of changing lives.

If you have someone whose name you would like carried, please post it to this thread or PM me. Every life makes a difference and I want people to SEE the difference! The statistics are just numbers. Those who have fought the fight are PEOPLE. Everyone should see them.

I am walking this year with the Couch People. If you were here for last year’s walk, you know that the pollen count will raise the bar this year. Jody’s whole family will be joining us as supporters this year.

And this is important to Jody’s daughter- she needs to see that her mother has left her a legacy.

Can we turn TR pink again? Beth, Jay- I think we can.

Support the fight against Breast Cancer. Go to http://www.the3day.org/twincities07/tricia to learn more.

If the link appears to be broken when you try it, PM me. I have ways.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

EDIT: If you want a ribbon, PM me. Or just use mine. It all works!

Edited again to remind you all that this is the final week!

missed your efforts last year and couldn’t manage to visit the ‘walk’ site at the weekend but suspect vista and IE7 were ganging up on me – going back tonight for another look.

I have a feeling that midnite pink should be one of the wife’s lipsticks, but let’s not go there…(!)

link to the walk site is working fine tonight (about 2030 BST which must be about 1230 TR time) – think I had an IE7 problem with the anti-phishing feature – so I guess they’re open for business!

I was having trouble with the direct link earlier but not having the same problem now. I didn’t worry too much as they have always been good about resolving technical problems quickly and I know a back door method that I am reluctant to publish.

well what can one say? I could mention my colleague who trained for the London Marathon by walking 5 miles a day, and by the end of the month was in the North Sea. Or maybe start a sub-thread to see how many songs people can remember which include the words ‘walking in the rain’?

on the other hand I could push off and let someone say something worthwhile. keep at it, TT.

OK, no probs.

a man walks into a bar and sees a fine display of summer clothing on the wall – easy to spot because the women’s items are very skimpy and none of the men’s clothing comes below the knee.

“Can I buy a pair of slacks?” he asks, and the barman (of course) replies

“no we only serve shorts”

well, you DID say any sort of nonsense would do…

It has been a hell of a week. my work PC finally gave up it’s ghost and won’t so much as even post anymore (replacement won’t be in until around 4pm today).

you’ve got a resurgence of the Millenium Bug – like malaria, it comes back every few years or so.

a suitable infusion of alcohol and an extended absence from all things silicon should do the trick. certainly too much water seems to be bad for both aspects of the cure.

In reply to Join the Pink Ribbon Brigade… Again!

I am very sympathetic to all cancer victims and survivors, being one myself. However, I just wish that there was more interest in funding for prostate cancer research as there are more men diagnosed with it than women with breast cancer and the fatalities are about the same as breast cancer. Why is this?

• #2617518

I don’t know the contrast statistics

by tig2 ·

In reply to I wish

I know that 10% of men with breast cancer die of it. Many men don’t know that they can get breast cancer.

Why isn’t the same attention paid to prostate cancer? I only have an opinion.

We get out and do events that force people to look at us, look at breast cancer. We beat people into awareness. Our “marketing” is 200,000 women every year who are diagnosed. And we are willing to be loud, visible, and obnoxious. We raise money and we force research into our cause.

For prostate cancer to get the same “air time”, the same grassroots action has to happen.

It is not comfortable for me to be the “voice of breast cancer”. But to me, it is a requirement. How many people in your daily life know that you are a survivor? EVERYONE in mine does. I am a walking pink ribbon. I devote every day of my life to raising awareness. Everything I own is pink (nearly) and I hate the colour. I’m a redhead.

If you are interested in what you can do to raise awareness of prostate cancer, PM me. I can give you some places to start.

This thread exists because I am a noisy person with an agenda. And it is part of the reason that breast cancer gets the exposure that it gets.

Congratulations on your survival!

I do know

by nyabdns ·

In reply to I don’t know the contrast statistics

I commend you on your energy and passion. I wish I had the same, but I’m still experiencing and fighting some of the side effects of treatment. There are over 250,000 men diagnosed each year with over 43,000 deaths from prostate cancer. It’s one of the top 3 cancer killers. A lot of the problem is that a lot of these men will be 70+ years old when diagnosed and the treatment is to just slow the cancer (with some very undesirable side effects) down until they die of other causes. I’m in my 50’s!!! When I was a patient at CTCA in Zion, they asked me to speak to the local board and the national board in Schaumburg and I pleaded with them to help raise awareness of prostate cancer. I also asked them to help find more options for the younger ones of us who have, hopefully, a long life ahead, since a lot of the side effects of treatment are very hard to deal with. I will have to say that CTCA is without a doubt the premier cancer treatment center in North America. I do share my experience with anyone who will listen and I do tell everyone I know to get checked for ANY thing that might indicate cancer or precancer. DON’T put it off if you know, or even suspect, something is wrong!!!!

• #2618101

Some ideas

by tig2 ·

In reply to I do know

I am very fortunate to be well past the side effects of treatment. Hair came back. Breast has stayed gone. Attitude problem slowly returning sometimes (like on the freeway!).

Not trying to be flippant. I know what a special joy treatment isn’t.

The statistics never fail to sadden me greatly. I know that they are only “representative” of the grim reality. The reality is of lives forever changed by a killer that should be eradicated.

One thought that may give you hope- When people talk to me they hear about cancer. Sure, I can only speak to breast cancer specifically but I can speak to any cancer generally. I carry a lot of names when I walk. Some are survivors, some are angels, all are united by the “c” word. My cousin is a 25 year survivor of Hodgkins, my aunt a 9 year survivor of colon cancer, my great aunt an angel from breast cancer. It’s ALL cancer and cancer kills.

PM me with a first name- or both if that is comfortable for you. Let me show your survival to anyone who can see me. Believe me, a tall redhead rarely goes un-noticed! Especially when covered in ribbons.

For men reading this thread- Urinary frequency is the first sign that something is not quite right. If you are developing a “going” problem, you may have a GROWING problem that can be surgically addressed. By doing so, you enable your physician to TELL you how to manage your health. Much like I constantly remind people to do their BSE and have the mammogram no matter how much you hate it, I have to tell men that they have to take charge of their health. ASK QUESTIONS, demand answers.

Let those of us willing to fight for awareness help in any way we can. Cancer sucks and we shouldn’t have to put up with it anymore.

Stay strong. You can get through this.

You are in my prayers.

However, I just wish that there was more interest in funding for prostate cancer research as there are more men diagnosed with it than women with breast cancer and the fatalities are about the same as breast cancer. Why is this?

Dress rehersal- 20 miles Saturday, 8 on Sunday

by tig2 ·

In reply to Join the Pink Ribbon Brigade… Again!

So Saturday started with a storm that uprooted trees and stuff like that there. Straight line winds, mayhem and devastation, possibly even a trick pony or two. That was around 3:00 a.m.

We caught the morning news and decided it would be prudent to carry our rain gear. And off we went to walk 20 miles.

The first half of the day went reasonably well. We made a point of walking the least shaded paths first, saving the nice shady lake for the afternoon.

It is amazingly difficult to carry everything you will need- like water. I carry just over a litre and drank every drop. Then went looking for more. We had a couple extra litres of Smart Water with us which helped some but we also drank a lot of City water. The best is when we first started out and right after lunch when we had FROZEN Smart Water. In the 90+ degree heat, it was nice but was gone all too soon.

By mile 16 we were looking pretty sad. Ran into another 3 Day walker and chatted a bit, perked us up some. The last mile was the worst. It was getting late and the storm that had been predicted for earlier in the day suddenly materialized. We got to the truck minutes before the first drops fell.

I had ibuprofen for supper and we both went to bed and became comatose. And at 5:45 this morning, I got up, had coffee and ibuprofen and walked some more.

Next weekend’s walks are minor- 10 on Saturday, 8 on Sunday. Then we go for the 20/20/20 of the 3 Day. It gets closer every day.

Think PINK!

Sounds like a long day.

Do you use MP3 players or anything like that to distract you, or just chat the whole time?

Did you get the third name? It feels good to have a POSITIVE name on my list of a survivor instead of “in memory of victims”.

As an ex runner, I would think now is the time to let your body repair it’s self from all the damage you have done to it over the last few months. Short, easy walks to keep moving, but you need time to regain your strength.

By now, your either ready or your not, and you already know that you are.

Scheduled to move a customer service counter and accounting room at 0500 as part of a store remodel. Got there and found network wasn’t punched down. Then it was punched down wrong (“A” at one end, “B” at the other). Then it was intermittent. Moved the first piece of equipment at 0900. Then had configuration problems, then moved some more equipment. Then the electricians came through to mount the boxes.

Finally got home at 2200. Back there this morning at 0800 to deal with even more configuration issues.

Damned security companies. X-( They want you to move their equipment, but won’t give you the configuration instructions for that equipment. Then they specify a 48-hour response to all calls. :_|

Another avatar storage location (Updated)

http://s201.photobucket.com/albums/aa12/sharewhat2/Breast%20Cancer%20Awareness/

This album is the same as the other and bandwidth shouldn’t be an issue, yet. Anyone can feel free to link directly or put any of the images in their own photobucket or online photo sharing account.

Twenty five GB of bandwidth in less than a month? Wow! That is a lot! I’ve seen pictures from that photobucket account on a lot of different sites.

It could be that the bandwidth use is so high because of the Digg or Stumble Upon effect. Also, when I checked that accounts options/statistics yesterday there were over 32000 hits. People might go there and stay to browse thru the 1000+ pictures in six albums. Who knows. Probably a little bit of everything but yeah, I’m a little bit surprised to see that that account is so popular this month.

My avatar won’t go black because I’m using an avatar from the new account at the link above. I have to get some new animations put together so I have something new to use after the 3-Day. Making different avatars keeps me out of the bars and off of the streets. :0

P.S. The newer account above already shows 7000 hits for the month but bandwidth barely registers. I have almost 200 photos in the album and sub-albums but no video. I’m guessing that it was the video in my other account that put the hurts to my bandwidth.

If I’m going to have video content, from now on, I’m going to create a seperate photobucket account for video only.

7 DAYS AWAY!

by tig2 ·

In reply to Join the Pink Ribbon Brigade… Again!

It is very nearly that time. My feet are already aching at the thought of what I am about to do to them.

We are busily trying to figure out where in the world we will be walking. They don’t tell us, they just give us a day card and post arrows to tell us where to go. I want to know in advance so we know where to take the couch!

I am trying to wrap things at work so that I can leave with a clear conscience. Not easy with multiple projects in flight. But it has to work out somehow. There is no way that I am missing this!

Have an easy walk schedule this weekend. This is good because there must be a hundred things I haven’t done yet.

To anyone picking up this thread- if you have names that you would like carried on the walk and have not already done so, post them here or peer mail me. Every name is a ribbon, every ribbon is a life touched by cancer. I walk so that one day, lives touched by cancer are the equivalent of lives touched by the common cold- treatable and survivable.

The countdown officially has begun!

Edited because I can’t make BOLD work. 🙁

The Countdown

by tig2 ·

In reply to Join the Pink Ribbon Brigade… Again!

A week from this moment, I will be in the third hour of the final day of the 3-Day. I am working Mon-Wed this week and taking Thursday to get ready. Come Friday at 4:00 a.m (Central DST US time, sorry Neil!)I will join around 3000 other walkers (hopefully not in the rain!) for Opening Ceremonies and the first of 3 days of walking.

Fund raising has been incredible this year with TR accounting for nearly $1500 of the total $6015 raised. Think about that accomplishment. Although we have never met in person, although we live in different countries, the peers of TR proved the value and the definition of community. I will never be able to thank you all enough for your support- both in dollars and in caring about this with me.

We are in sight of the end- the end of training walks, the end of drinking Smart Water to the exclusion of all else, the end of dry wicking EVERYTHING, the end of living in my walking shoes. And in sight of the beginning- the beginning of long days walking, camaraderie the likes of which I have only experienced on this walk, the hugs from total strangers, the laughter at the really bad boob jokes, the tears that come at so many times for so many reasons.

For three days, I will walk with the Couch People and watch old walkers and new introduced to the display of love by one family determined to remember Jody, determined to honor survivors.

And for three days I will carry the names of the survivors and the angels in an effort to insure that we always see the human element of the disease. The statistics somehow insulate us from the fact that the numbers are PEOPLE affected by a disease that I know can be cured.

If you haven’t changed your avatar yet, please do so this week. I will check in on this thread periodically through the next week and will try (no promises) to post through the event. Last year I was somewhat functional at the end of Day One and completely toast thereafter.

We have been running all day. First job this morning was to get the oil in my car changed. I wanted breakfast but no time for it. We went out to the Opening ceremonies site and ran into a good friend. A perfect beginning!

The walk this year is in a very different area than last year because of the State Fair. As a result, I now know that we are walking an area known as the Coon Rapids Dam and Mississippi River Trail. This is great because I train there and have walked the first ten miles numerous times. The first 5 or so miles are really beautiful and easy walking. I am pretty certain that I know the Day One route- mostly area that I have trained in.

We will walk right past the partner’s Mom’s house- well, street, anyway. She’s excited that she will get to see us and cheer us on. She will likely come to Closing Ceremonies as well but has never gotten to see us during the walk.

I finally got all the angels and survivors pinned to the over-tunic that I will wear for the 3 days. I was a bit fearful at first that the angels out-numbered the survivors, but was proven wrong. When you see the photos, the angels are in front, survivors in back.

In discovering the route, I found that I am walking right past a place that I used to work, and the partner still does. There was a going-away party for one of our co-workers- she’s retiring- so I dropped a bug in her ear to start a viral email in the company that they should come out and cheer us on. That would be a hoot!

Tomorrow will start early- 3:00 a.m. We have to be out the door by 4:00. I will shower tonight and have my clothes laid out. The truck has been decorated, a bunch of stuff is already in it, he’s making supper and we will eat and work.

The butterflies are ginormous. I am wondering if I have completely taken leave of all my senses. My feet are already hating me.

But I have seen so much this year that makes it all worthwhile. A dear friend has joined the 3 Day community and is loving every minute of her time on the crew. Without the crew, we cannot do this. A co-worker’s sister was diagnosed last month. Today she is preparing to take on aggressive chemo in an effort to win the fight. Because of the 3 Day, her family has felt free to ask questions. Because she will not be able to work for a year due to the chemo (she is a Special Education teacher) her family is trying to develop a fund raiser (or many) to help fill the gap between her current earnings for the year and what LTD will pay. I have volunteered to be the pink ribbon for those fund raising efforts and to bring what I have learned about fund raising to the table.

This year I was blessed to be able to share the truth of breast cancer in men and to start to direct new thinking along those lines. 10% of men with the disease, die of it. And due to simple lack of knowledge.

I am wearing 100 names. Those names represent a fraction of the real people in this world impacted by cancer. For the next 3 days, they are people- people with lives, people with families. When you strip away the statistics, you are left with the sobering truth. Cancer kills. Find a cure. Start NOW.

I cannot tell you how much the involvement of my peers here at TR has touched me. From donations from 5 countries to your constant encouragement. You all walk with me, every step of the way. And you help to make the impossible a simple task.

Together, we raised over $6000 this year. Next year will be even better. The partner and I are asking that people not send a wedding gift, but to make a donation to the 3 Day. So all of you that would like to send a wedding gift can make a tax deductible donation. And I am shooting for $10,000 next year- my personal 3-peat.

I need to get this posted and get on to the rest of the stuff that has to happen before 3:00 tomorrow. A reminder- if you want the ribbon in shoes- the one that walks with me, I need a street address. Please feel free to PM that to me.

You all rock! If you haven’t already done so, please change your avatar to a pink ribbon. There are links to pink ribbons on this thread, or just use mine.

The world I want is a world without cancer. Tomorrow, I begin the journey to find that world.

Thank you all!

Day Two. Forty Miles Down, 20 to go

by tig2 ·

In reply to Join the Pink Ribbon Brigade… Again!

Where to begin? This has been so amazing.

Day One was through a lot of area that I train in. That made it somewhat easier but I will admit that when I got home last night, I was pretty much toast.

Day Two was difficult. I was fine this morning but struggled through the last two miles. But I made it through.

I will detail the full 60 miles and post pictures again. This has been just as amazing this year as it was last year. In many ways, more so.

My entire body hurts and I am choosing the “breakfast of champions” lately- coffee and ibuprofen. It has been working for me.

Stay tuned. I get up at 3:00 a.m. to leave by 4:00 a.m. so I can start walking. A woman that I met last year and have grown to call a friend is walking her second 3 Day this year. Tomorrow we will walk to the closing ceremonies together- as survivors.

This thing changes lives.

3 Days, 60 Miles… Because EVERYONE deservs a Lifetime

by tig2 ·

In reply to Join the Pink Ribbon Brigade… Again!

It is Monday morning and I am slowly but surely reaching for normalcy after three days of the abnormal.

Friday started VERY early. I had to have my credential re-printed as it never arrived by mail. Rather than fight my way through long lines, I opted for getting there as early as possible. With credential in hand- around neck is more accurate- I wandered around the holding area and met up with 3 Day walkers from the year before. I was rather surprised that I knew so many, but shouldn’t have been, I suppose. I was also surprised at how many knew me- the Pink Ribbon Lady.

I found my team before Opening Ceremonies. At quarter past 6:00, we were anxious to get on the road.

Opening was very moving. This year they did something very different. They had flags made up, each bearing a single word- Best Friends, Love, Commitment, Victory, Strength, etc. They were randomly handed to walkers to carry and pass along. The intention was that each flag be carried by a walker for awhile and passed along to another walker. On Day One, I carried “Best Friends” for a mile or so before handing it off. On Day Three, I carried “Love” for a couple of miles. Every time I stopped to stretch, walkers would ask to have their picture taken with the flag. I finally got one of them to carry it.

We had been hit by a couple of pretty powerful storms just before the event began- the most recent being on Thursday. Rain was a probability but not something we wanted. Fortunately, Friday was cloudy in the morning, sunny through the day.

Day One was literally through the area that I train in. There were no surprises in the trail at all, but some pleasant surprises along the way.

Residents on the trail had been pre-warned that we were coming. Many had seen 3 Day walkers train in that area all spring and summer so made a point of coming out to cheer us. One house in particular had decorated their trees with pink mylar and had pink decorations on their chairs and themselves. they certainly cheered up a storm! Just out of the second pit stop, we had the first “Cowboy” sighting. My fiance had gotten a pink leopard print cowboy hat and stuck all his pins to it. He would find a place on the trail and park, pull a chair out of the back of the truck, and cheer walkers. By the end of the day, rumours were going through the line of walkers about the Cowboy and his outrageously painted and decorated truck. Some walkers noticed that when I passed, I was getting a hug and fresh water from him. About a block away from the last pit stop, I pulled off the trail and gave him a kiss before parking myself in his chair and taking my shoes off. We got a round of applause for that.

Day One had two Cheering stations that the event had organised but many that they had no clue about. People found walkers and set up their own cheering stations. There were three that deserve special mention.

Two ladies in an official Caribou coffee van had a boom box playing loudly, pompoms, mints, spray bottles, and clappers. They were wonderful. And they tended to show up when we needed them most. A group from Qwest set up shelters, passed out hand fans, sprayed us down, and cheered their hearts out. A woman who has walked every year since 2004 was not able to walk with us this year. When she walks, she blows up balloons and twists them into awareness ribbons that she ties to peoples hats and visors. On day one she showed up three different times, including the last mile. There is a constantly running joke that they put the last mile sign a mile and a half from the actual stopping point. She drove along the route and pulled over at exactly one mile. Then she got out of her car and pulled out a bullhorn, promising walkers that there really was only one mile to go.

Day One was different for us in that they bussed us from Pit 5 to camp. Generally we walk to camp. Because our route was so different, they had to bus us from Shoreview to Maplewood where camp was set up. What made that interesting was that people would get on the bus feeling pretty good and go completely stiff on the 10 minute ride. When they got off the bus, there was much stretching before actually walking into camp. Fortunately, there was a nice big bus to stretch against!

A friend of mine volunteered to work in Camp Services this year so I got a chance to connect with her at the end of the day. It was great to see a familiar face in all the very tired people.

The couch made four appearances on the trail on Day One. And we had many opportunities to share the story. At the end of the event, “I Sat On Jody’s Couch” pins were worn by virtually every walker. I can’t count the number of times I told the story and I know that everyone on the team can say the same.

Day Two started in camp and ended there- no buses but the Sag buses. We hit the trail at around 7:00 a.m. and started walking. The “Cowboy” found us four different times before lunch. I was walking with a group of people about a mile before the cheering station when he appeared on a side street. I headed toward him for more water and heard the people right behind me saying, “It’s the cowboy! I want a picture with him!” We have no idea how many pictures he had taken of him. In that group, one of the walkers offered to take a picture of him with me. There must have been eight or ten others snapping the same picture. He showed up again before lunch and several times after.

The St Paul Winter Carnival Vulcans found us about 2.5 miles from Camp. They posed for numerous pictures and again, painted awareness ribbons on us. They were a wonderful lift at just the right time. The couch also made an appearance there with all of Jody’s family in attendance. They created their own little cheering section wherever they went.

Found the cowboy crossing the trail about a mile out of camp. Coincidental but happened to cross as I was waiting to cross.

At the end of Day Two, numerous walkers were telling me how much they appreciated seeing “my husband” all day. He was a hit with the walkers!

Day Three was mostly easy walking. We passed the 35W bridge on the other side of the river and could easily see the clean up efforts. It was remarkable how much of that work had been accomplished. We crossed 35W on a pedestrian bridge and could see the point where the freeway was gone. Many walkers stopped to take pictures. I chose not to. I would rather take pictures of the new bridge when it is completed than to immortalise the tragedy.

Closing Ceremonies was short but moving. I walked into Closing with a good friend who is also a Survivor. The tennis shoe salute to the survivors was truly amazing to witness.

This year, the cheering sections, both planned and ad hoc, were truly amazing. Compared to last year, they were HUGE! The level of support we had was just awesome!

I need to close this somewhere, and here is just as good a place as any. This year, unlike last year, saw a level of appreciation for the walkers that was just overwhelming. I got an opportunity to really see that we really don’t do all that much. We walk, we get tired and sweaty, we raise money. It is really those of you that support that make any of it possible.

This year, the Twin Cities raised $6.5 Million dollars. That is truly incredible. To all of you who took part in that, THANK YOU! Together, we really DO make a difference!

I took today off. After 60 miles, I thought that was a reasonable thing to do- I am fried. I go back to the grind tomorrow and plan to do little or nothing over the Labor Day weekend. I am still pretty tired and very emotional. Having done this before, I know that I can expect to break out in tears over seemingly little.

Today is Ibuprofen day. I am planning a nap as my most strenuous activity. We are also going to try to get the cameras downloaded so that I can get a digital scrap book posted. And we need to figure out how far I really walked.

Hopefully, I will find time for a massage. I’m not counting on anything, but I am hoping.

I’m either going to download cameras or take a nap. Both sound like good ideas.

My friend that less than a year ago was celebrating five years cancer free is now in the battle of her life with liver cancer and is doing good to walk to the bathroom. You were walking for her and all those fighting this battle. I’m praying for a miracle for her as it will take one if you know the odds of beating liver cancer.

I will keep her in my prayers. And I will cheerfully carry her ribbon. She can join me in “kicking some cancer @ss”.

I heard today that my co-worker’s sister, diagnosed at Stage 2B last month, may have another cancer as well. More proof of why it is so important to be loud, visible, obnoxious, and relentless in reaching for a cure. I’m tired of this murdering disease and tired of being at its mercy.

We WILL find a cure.

Finally have the tracks

by tig2 ·

In reply to Join the Pink Ribbon Brigade… Again!

According to the GPS, I walked 62 miles over the past three days. And I had wondered why I am so tired!

To date, I have walked 120+ miles in the fight against cancer. Next year will add another 60 miles- I am doing it again.

Hoping that I can arrange something with TR so that I can carry their logo with facsimiles of the signatures of the wonderful supporters here.

I discovered this year that I have to keep looking forward- no breaks in the preparation for the 2008 fundraising season and walk. Work and planning a wedding will keep me plenty busy!

Online photo album coming soon. The cameras are downloaded and I am picking through thousands of pictures that tell the story of the 60 mile journey that I have shared with walkers and supporters from all over the world.

The stories of this year are endless. I will share a quick one.

A woman living within a mile of me was diagnosed in October of last year. She is 36, full of life, three daughters, and has a stunning smile. She chose the double mastectomy and immediate reconstruction.

Two months ago, they told her that she should do radiation instead of another round of chemo. Even though that would put her in the midst of the 3 Day, she agreed.

Around her, a team developed overnight- 15 women came together out of nowhere to support her in walking the 3 Day.

She couldn’t be with us on Day One. But her team walked strong regardless. She joined us on Day 3 to make the final walk to victory. She walked as far as she could after a radiation treatment on Day One.

She is the heart of the 3 Day. And another reason I walk.

I could blog this to death- I know so many stories and have my own to tell. Let me share some of my experience.

In 2003, I had been laid off and couldn’t find a job no matter how hard I tried. And I was willing to do anything. Multiple layoffs since 2001 had completely depleted my resources and I was at wits end to figure out what to do.

In early October, one breast turned black and blue and was weeping pus. I turned to the State for medical help. Very fortunately, I ended up with our State funded Chief of Staff. My doc always had “baby doctors” in various stages of development with him. I recall telling him that we had to have a couple of rules. If there were more than 15 people in the room, I wanted a tip jar. And there would be no yelling down the hall, “Y’all got to see this!”.

My initial diagnosis was sub-areolar fistula. Initially the fistula (read “infection”) was drained. Big news here- if anyone ever says the words “scalpel” and “nipple” in your presence, RUN!!! Especially if you don’t get any pain killers first. I didn’t.

Three days later, the problem wasn’t only not gone, it was bigger. I went back to be checked and found myself in emergency surgery on the same day as I had a promising interview. I called to do damage control in the hour I had before surgery- I had to take my car home and get a ride to the hospital- but was told that I couldn’t reschedule the interview.

I woke up from surgery with missing parts. The cancer was found incidental to trying to clear the infection that had destroyed my breast.

I am on the list for prophylactic mastectomy of the remaining tissue on one side and the removal of the other. I keep hoping for insurance but fear that I have had this issue for too long. I am BrCA1 and BrCA2 positive, which tells me that I have a good chance of playing this game again. So I need to keep on pushing for a cure.

I can never tell you supporters how much you help and what you do to keep me going. I loved telling the TR story every chance I got and loved knowing that you have all made such a difference.

We’ll do it all again next year. I have the seed, I just need to make it grow.

Thank you all again for making it all possible.

Carrying all those ribbons is an “in your face” way to show anyone looking the toll that cancer takes. Numbers aren’t human and can be hard to grasp. Ribbons are people. They are lives and families. And all too often changed irrevocably by the fiend that is cancer. I want to see that change.

Your ribbons will walk next year too- going for the 3-peat in 08!

Perhaps a long stay in a Hospital Bed where you work might not go astray maybe? :p

Now do the following test to see if you need that bed. :0

HOW TO KEEP A HEALTHY LEVEL OF INSANITY

1) At lunch time, sit in your parked car w/sunglasses on and point a hair
dryer at passing cars. See if they slow down.

2) Page yourself over the intercom. Don’t disguise your voice.

3) Insist that your e mail address is:Xena-Warrior-Princess@companyname.com

4) Every time someone asks you to do something, ask if they want fries with
that.

5) Encourage your colleagues to join you in a little synchronized chair
dancing.

6) Put your garbage can on your desk and label it “IN.”

7) Develop an unnatural fear of staplers.

8) Put decaf in the coffee maker for 3 weeks. Once everyone has gotten
over their caffeine addictions, switch to espresso.

9) In the memo field of all your checks, write ‘for sexual favors.’

10) Reply to everything someone says with,”That’s what you think.”

11) Finish all your sentences with “In accordance with the prophecy.”

12) Adjust the tint on your monitor so that the brightness level lights
up the entire work area. Insist to others that you like it that way.

13) Dont use any punctuation

14) As often as possible, skip rather than walk.

15) Ask people what sex they are. Laugh hysterically after they answer.

16) Specify that your drive-through order is “to go.”

17) Sing along at the opera.

18) Go to a poetry recital and ask why the poems don’t rhyme.

19) Find out where your boss shops and buy exactly the same outfits. Wear
them one day after your boss does. (This is especially effective if your
boss is of the opposite gender.)
20) Send e-mail to the rest of the company to tell them what you’re
doing. For example, “If anyone needs me, I’ll be in the bathroom, in
Stall #3.”

21) Put mosquito netting around your cubicle. Play a tape of jungle
sounds all day.

22) Five days in advance, tell your friends you can’t attend their party
because you’re not in the mood.

23) Call 911 and ask if 911 is for emergencies.

24) Call the psychic hotline and don’t say anything.

25) Have your coworkers address you by your wrestling name, Rock Hard.

26) When the money comes out of the ATM, scream “I Won!”, “I Won!” “3rd
time this week!!!”

27) When leaving the zoo, start running towards the parking lot, yelling
“Run for your lives, they’re loose!”

28) Tell your boss, “It’s not the voices in my head that bother me, its
the voices in your head that do.”

29) Tell your children over dinner.”Due to the economy, we are going to
have to let one of you go.”

30) Every time you see a broom, yell “Honey, your mother is here!”

* And the final way to keep a healthy level of insanity….

31. Send this e-mail to everyone in your address book, even if they sent it
to you or have asked you not to send them stuff like this

Col

After all there is nothing about a Lunar Ellipse in the Bible and as the Bible is irrefutable a Lunar Ellipse can not happen unless it is the end of the world. 😀

God I would love to see one of the ijiot Bible Bashes explain that one away and make sense. :^0

until you mentioned it. The Bible doesn’t mention everything in the world or universe specifically, there’s lots of things not specifically mentioned. Any good Bible basher would easily deal with your point of view with a large size Bible applied to your left temple quite hard – that’s why they’re called Bible bashers, they bash you with their Bible.

Now me, I just accept what the Lord has to say to me and move on past them 🙂

orange moon? What about a red moon (aka blood moon).

The red moon, or often orange moon were taken as a very bloody battle was about to occur. Which is why it was dubbed ‘blood moon’.

and most definitely not seen it before. But then, for most of my life, I’ve lived in cities where we rarely saw the sky either, and never any stars at night, washed out by the city lights.

In reply to Well done, that girl! :p :D

I don’t think that I have much choice in taking some down time. I have discovered that I am aging like a bad B movie and can no longer just “do” the sixty without some consequences.

But I won’t be down long.

Sharing the story of your family with others- both walkers and cheerers- was a strong message. To be able to point to all of the angels and survivors from a single family line was a turning point for some people. And many will be taking different actions this week because they were exposed to the impact of cancer to a single family.

Every ribbon has a face, every ribbon has a story. I am proud to say that I know the stories of my ribbons. But the fact that I DO know those stories gives all my angels and survivors a way to communicate their lives to an extent. Ribbons can change lives.

A co-worker whose sister was diagnosed last month felt free to share the experience and to open his families questions and fears to me. He felt that freedom because I took all my ribbons to work and pinned them to my walls. I handed out pink ribbons to my co-workers on Wednesday before the walk. Because of that, many were comfortable sharing their experience with cancer. Many were still wearing the pink ribbons today. Many more had them mounted on their walls.

You have no idea how many lives you and your family touched. You will likely never know that you saved a life.

It’s hard to take time off. This is MY party and I want to enjoy EVERY minute.

All of my supporters do the hard work, I just lace up the shoes and walk where I’m told.

I want to see an end to cancer in my lifetime. The best way to get there is to promote awareness. Today, early detection is the best tool we have. But even when a cure is found, we will still need to be aware.

Over 3000 pink people are hard to miss. We definitely get your attention. And once we have your attention, we can raise your awareness.

Thanks for being a supporter. Don’t let go yet- I’m doing it again in 2008!

I’ll keep carrying your angel with me. I’ll send you the ribbon I carried this year- maybe a bit worse for the wear, but still ready for the challenge. I will make a new one for next year.

If it wasn’t for people like you, there wouldn’t be the awareness or push for a cure to this ugly disease that touches everyones life in some way.

I don’t think I could walk 62 miles in 3 days (I would need a foot transplant after that), but you’ll always have my support for your efforts.

I’m so sorry to hear about your problems. I can relate, unfortunately, as I am a high-risk person because of problems I’ve had in the past (thankfully benign) and my sister had breast cancer 2 years ago. Every year, I pray before I go for my mammograms, MRIs, Ultrasounds, you name it. You know. Its the endless doctor visit.

One day though, there’s going to be a cure because of the efforts of people like you. Keep up the good work, Tig! Everyone here is behind you.
