Joining an Active Directory Domain

By Jeremy The IT Guy ·
I have Windows 2000 Advanced Server and I'm trying to join a Windows 2000 Professional computer to the newly created domain. Everytime I try to do so, it says that I couldn't join the domain because the network path was not found. If I go to Network Neighborhood, I see the domain I'm trying to join but I still get the error. Please help. Thanks, Jeremy

Have you created a computer and user account to log on to the domain with? Also forward and reverse lookups in DNS for the client. Basic connectivity OK, same subnet, ping both ways, etc.?

Hi, I had a simalr prob when I first installed win2k server and pro. My main prob was I was using a STRAIGHT-THRU cable (blue) instead of a CROSSOVER cable (white). Once I did this, I was able to get a logon screen to allow the client to join the domain. Another prob could come from not having the proper IP configuration. Try to ping the server from the client and visa-versa. Here is a good site to get you started. http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/planning/server/prosteps.asp

Good Luck and Have fun

I had the same problem and this fixed it for me. Log onto the client as the local administrator and re-join the machine to a workgroup. Use any name you want. Log off and on again and then configure it to join the domain. When prompted for account with authority to join domain use Administrator user name and Domain password for the admin.
