Keeping Hot Mail Off Student Machines

By Peter J ·
Students are encouraged to access our computers and the Internet for research purposes. It is not possible to supervise them when they do so. They take advantage of the situation to set up msn Hot Mail accounts and download messages, thus risking the introduction of viruses although we do have a virus checker installed. Is there any way to stop them from setting up msn Hot Mail accounts on these computers or to prevent them from accessing their own msn Hot Mail accounts? Is there a quick way todelete msn Hot Mail accounts and associated files from the computers when they have finished? They are accessing msn Hot Mail with Netscape Communicator

Hot Mail is a free email service that can be accessed though the browser, making it eay to access email server from any computer.
If the computer are not to have email setup for any purposes you could try editing the email server setup going to Preferences and editing the properties.
Even editing the properties will not work,by having access to the internet they will only have to use the browser to login to Hotmail.
Adding filtering software may help, clearing the accounts can be done by clearing the cache after the session has ended.

Install a webmonitor control program like surfcontrol so you can manage the websites they may or may not access.

With many computers and limited funds, I was trying to find an expensive answer to this question. Your solution probably works fine but I would need more info and perhaps more money to put it into effect. Thanks for the trouble you took to answer myquestion. More info about Surfcontrol might help.

Use of URL- and/or firewall filtering is the only way you will be able to get around this problem. Use http://www.squid-cache.org proxy for internet access http://www.squid-cache.org with www.squidGuard.org for active filtering. Both of these are suppert open-source tools which works extremly well.

(Remmeber to filter "anonymoiser" web sites as well as the sites you want restricted.)

You have to contect surfcontrol for that at
http://www.surfcontrol.com/products/cyberpatrol_for_education/product_overview/index.html

They charge per pc or user, it's not a fix price, and this link is for educational institutes.
You can try winproxy (winproxy.com) also , thats also a per pc contract, so contact them. I am pretty sure you can do content blocking with it.

Sorry Deja Vu but proved not to be a viable option. As we run close to the red, unable to afford the rates offered.
