Keeping Local Profile Size in Check

By Dorttocs ·
I am having trouble keeping our local profile size in check using NT 4. The profiles are being stored on the PDC. The profile size grows at least 100K a day and gets to the point where it takes 3-5 minutes to log in or out. The one thing I have tried was to change the location where IE5's Internet cache is being written. It was being written to the users local profile. That has seemed to help a bit, but still the size keeps growing. It seems a lot worse if I log in to multiple computers.

Any suggestions on how to keep the profile a manageable size or what might be causing this size increase?

I went to a Microsoft Seminar a couple of month's ago and the suggeted using a third party software for profile size management. Yoy should be able to find it on their web site. For the other part, do you know if any new files are added to your profile every time or wich files are growing?

Have you considered using proquota.exe? It's a utility that can be set up to monitor the size of users' profiles. If an individual user's profile exceeds the predetermined file limit, the user won't be able to log off of the computer until the user reduces the size of the file.

You don't need any 3rd party to manage your profile size, check "how to Enable Profile Quotas in Windows NT 4.0 [Q185561]"

About keeeping your profile size minimal I suggest you create a new profile and keep an eye on its size to determine the cause of this size increase,

Good luck
