Laptop hangs on battery power

By raytucker ·
I'm running Windows 7 and laptop works with AC power, but if I unplug, the system locks up. On battery, it will boot until Welcome, than stop, but will boot in Safe mode and run with no problems. I've changed battery, but same result. I don't see any confict in Software/Hardware, but think its the problem, but no report to show.

Boot the laptop with a Linux Distro

download a burn a CD, boot and run the laptop with the CD.

If it does the same thing, it's hardware. If not, it's software.

Have you tried setting the BIOS settings to factory default?

What make/model laptop? How old is it?

I would locate the manufacturers diagnostics program and run those. That's typically what they would ask you to do before attempting a warranty claim.

My first guess is that the laptop system board is shot, but I would first run diags and/or try a linux distro just in case it is a software issue.

I ran the CD and it hung with the battery, but ran with AC connected.

Well the good news / bad news

You cannot blame Windows or any part of the OS for the problem, obviously.

At the end of the day, unless there are some weird peripherals plugged in that draw a ton of power, then you have the battery and system board. As someone else here mentioned, it sometimes helps to reset the BIOS, but other than that, it sounds like a flaky system board.

If it's a Software problem which I very much doubt

I would be looking at the Power Settings while on Battery.

I suppose that it's possible that they are set to such an extent that they lock the unit down but I would expect the OS to load to the Log On Screen at the very least.

I would really suggest as above to use a Live Linux and see what happens. If you don't have one you can try your Local Newsagent for a Live Linux as a Cover Disc on a Linux Mag or download one from here for free

The system hangs at a few seconds after I unplug the cord, so I have no way to see anything about the battery. I ran the CD and it hung with the battery, but ran with AC connected.

I would check the BIOS settings

for any power management configuration which might be limiting your ability to complete a reboot.

Otherwise, I would check with the vendor - you may have a bad battery, battery connection, or something wrong with the hardware logic which controls the battery.

I have seen batteries that get banged or dropped have similar issues. Hopefully, its not the motherboard.
