Laptop won't start up after installing updates

dawn
I recently installed Micrososft's latest updates on my Acer 4315 series laptop running on Vista Home Basic. Now I am getting a start up error that says Microsoft cannot figure out the problem. I've tried going through safe mode to the last successful boot and it still keeps giving me the same error box.

Of course I don't have a system restore or recovery disk. (Shame on me!) Is my only option to buy a recovery disc?

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

Are you able to go in and remove the updates you installed?

    Hi Jimmy-jam,
Thank you for your reply. I'm not sure how to remove the installed updates from safe mode. I have tried the debugging option and going back to the last successful boot and I keep getting a windows box that says Start up repair cannot repair this computer automatically.

Could you post the full error message so we have something to work with, what happens when you try save mode?

How far does it boot to the OS before you get the error message?

Try booting into safe mode it's self then try to uninstall the update you installed or try to recover the system to a earier date hope this helps.

well, acer's sort of the consumer economic machine.
    basics. is bios updated?
and then of course, there's the BS updates from MS.
use proven updates. or downgrade to a working OS with updated SP's

I figured out how to access the recovery on my laptop. I pressed alt & F10 when it began to boot and followed the eRecovery prompts. Granted, I lost EVERYTHING, but it's up and running. Now I'm occassionally experiencing some funky black line down the (center or off to the right) screen as the computer boots. It first appears on the Acer screen and after Vista loads, my screen is split in either 2 or four panes. I'm able to access and utilize the system when multiple panes exist. Obviously, I choose to restart until the lines disappear (once or twice).

    Any insight??
    Thanks in advance,
