Help!! My HP Laserjet 4MPlus is printing a fat vertical line on the left side of paper. It is not a toner problem. Thanks for any help.

quick check list,

drum unit,
tone, () which is ok from what yuou have said
fuser,
paper path.

Most bad print quality problems come from the drum unit being damaged, marked or generally defective.

Will it run the self-test? Check the manual to see how to get it to run the self test. If that prints up okay, then the problem may be a loose data cable connection, or the laser printer simply has a bad communications board. Check the cables and make sure they're all tight. If you're using an A/B switch, take it out and connect the printer directly to the computer. If that doesn't help, it sounds like you need to take it to a service center. One more thing to try, connect it to a different computer and see if it works from there. You never know, the parallel port on your system could be bad - not likely though. Good luck

Thanks for your help guys-- got it fixed. It was the toner cartridge after all. Both were messed up.
