A "carrier stall" means that the carrier that the ink cartridge sits in is unable to move back and forth properly. When a printer starts up, it usually moves the cartridge from a "rest" position to a "home" position to ensure that the ink delivery system can cover the page. Failure to achieve that move generates an error condition. Possible causes are that a belt or wire has broken or come off, a motor isn't running, or something is blocking the path that the carrier moves along. The older HP Deskjets were notorious for having a plastic paper tray cover that could be installed two ways that looked correct, but the second position put part of the tray where the carrier ran into it as the carrier moved across the page. Look for any pieces or parts that could be out of position and blocking the path.

Lexmark printers are notorious for ink getting on the steel bar that the carrier slides on and drying up. Wipe a fine oil (sewing machine) on the bar sparingly until the carrier frees up. I have encountered this problem several times and has resulted in a broken carrier in one instance.
