There are numerous software auditing packages available (although I haven't seen ny freeware packages). These packages will audit and record what software is installed on the computers the package is installed on.

Normally these packages are in the form of a "server" that provides a central repository of data and reporting capabilities, and "clients" that must be run on each computer. There aare often specific clients for each operating system.

Usually the only way to determine whether a specific software installation is legal (has a valid license), is to conduct a manual inventory of your software. The most often definition of legal license is one software package (disks/CDs and manuals) per installation. Some bulk licenses may only give you a piece of paper saying you are authorized to load the software on X number of computers. No auditing package that I am aware of has any way of determining whether a given installation is legal or not.

BTW, I ran a search on Googlefor Software Audit and Google returned 11 paqges of hits.

If you're only looking at Microsoft software, they have a free tool you can download. It's called the Microsoft Software Inventory Analyzer, you can set up what MS products to look for within the domain.

For a more complete solution, we use Audit Wizard, it gets hardware and software information and allows you to create custom reports.

Good luck,
James
